i might even want to buy another harddrive... so if you know how to install it it would be fantabo. i dont even know how much memory my comp has and if it's a reasonable amount of memory space or not. i do a lot of design work on my comp for school so i want it to run smoothly for next semester. so the damn "your scratch disk is full" crap wont show up anymore.

advantages of telling you that "YOU'VE PLUGGED IN A MOUSE!! WOULD YOU LIKE TO ENABLE IT SO YOU CAN USE IT?" I have 4 linux boxes (gentoo, fedora, debian, freebsd) and 1 Winbloze laptop, which runs 2000 pro. The only reason I use Windows, is because of the compatibility that is has with most programs which linux doesnt. Other than that, Open Source > Bill Gates. :)

thats just a given open source will always be way better then anything closed sourced. But I doubt a lot of the probrams Bev will use will work without hicups on a linux system..

the win95-cored operating systems were shoddy and unreliable (lol, winme). the win2k-cored operating systems have been stable and powerful. any system can become unstable and perform poorly if you don't know what you're doing.

in my experience, most people that bitch at windows xp's stability are guilty of thinking they know more about what they're doing than they do. those who generally don't know what they're doing and acknowledge the fact get people who do know to teach them and don't mess things up in the interim.

windows xp = user-friendly and damn stable. there's no reason to be using 2000 or 2003. worse driver support, worse tech support, et cetera. 2000 and 2003 are meant for professional and/or server use. windows xp is better for non-technical users, and is as good an option as either of the others for technical users as well.

linux isn't yet a viable option for the average user. sorry to burst the bubble. it's getting increasingly more viable, but it's far from being as straightforward to use and compatible with current software as windows. linspire's trying, and that's good to see.

open sourced means that the program coding can be seen and distributed changed and improved closed sourced means you get what ya get :)

I been hooked on Linux for over 3 years now, and have never had a problem with software compatibilities.

oh and i was reading this yesterday! :P

http://www.wired.com/news/linux/0,1411,66022,00.html

Quote:
Commercial software typically has 20 to 30 bugs for every 1,000 lines of code, according to Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab Sustainable Computing Consortium. This would be equivalent to 114,000 to 171,000 bugs in 5.7 million lines of code.
-The study identified 0.17 bugs per 1,000 lines of code in the Linux kernel
Linux software vendors, contains 985 bugs in 5.7 million lines of code, well below the industry average for commercial enterprise software.
ouch! :)

that is to be expected you have a million programmers looking over the same amount of code as you have say a thousand programmers.. Also there are less Linux viruses and nasties around due to the fact that the hacker doesnt wanna create somthing that will be used against him easier..

hmm... no office, no internet explorer, no kazaa, no adobe products, few programs you can buy at a store have linux versions, et cetera. although you might not have a problem with software compatibility, most people are used to polished, professional interfaces, and this is where linux falls down.

SiagOffice?
Mozilla?
Opera?
Firefox?
Netscape?
Who the fuck uses Kazaa?
Gimp > Photoshop
And anything adobe has made can be read/viewed/edited on a linux machine.
