Art Portfolios
k..here i am tryin to put one together. thank god for art ap in school.. THANK GOD. ive been stressing and extremly nervous about this. having major mind block in ideas too. i know a few of u are probably puttin one together as well. wut do u have so far? and for those WHO HAS ONE MADE ne suggestions (especially to get into art schools). i need as many ideas as i can.
EMILY CARR PORTFOLIO DAY IS COMING UPPPPPP...DECEMBER! ahhhh! right now in art ap i have to make a portfolio that gets sent to boston to get evaluated and if i get 3 or higher out of 6, i get some kind of credit for post secondary. i dont really care about the credits, i care about them actually lookin at it and giving me comments. overall i have to submit i think 24 slides.. and in different catagories. right now im workin on my concentration... actually brainstorming wut i can do my 10 concentration slides on. thinkin of interpretation of music, windows, eyes, outlets, self analysis...i duno i wanna choose wisely. my ideas part of my brain is dying out. VERY bad timing...=(. SO NERVOUS....it feels like my future depends on this portfolio. |

^ use a variety of mediums....
i think that they look for variety or something.... i dunno i think a teacher was once telling me that it's good to keep a sketchbook. I dunno, i keep one just for the helluvit, it's my visual diary with fish sauce on it (grr to that stinkin piece of shit.) good luck though ;) art ap must be stressful I hear you have to complete one assignment per week. luv to see it when you're done... |

bev, art ap saved my life when it came down to me making a portfolio. the ap programme has changed though from when i did it...when i did it there was the drawing portfolio or the general portfolio. now there's 3 sections, yeah? good luck, and get started on your concentration ASAP!!!
oh and hun, you should check into what universities recognize AP credits. some universities don't recognize the programme and even at that, some universities have different cut off marks. UBC is a 4 on the exam. whereas a lot of american schools recognize a 3. |

thanks guys. i really wnna get started on my concentration asap....after this post im gonna go take a look at the ap site and see wut ideas they can give me. (i dont wanna do sumthing that is typical and predictable). sammy...they have drawing, 2d design and 3d now. i obviously chose 2d design~ =) art ap is really saving my ass... we have monday drawing workshops..where we do various intensive drawings. i drew about 40 peppers today...that was interesting. my goal is to use color wisely and try out different medias. experiment with everything. sammy..did u send ure portfolio to boston?
my concentration ideas so far: concentration on music devices, interpretation on genres of music... i need more ideas than this. this is PATHETIC. |

i think we sent ours to boston??? boston or texas or something? somewhere in the states :) they were even supposed to put my concentration up on their website but they never did for some reason. they sent me a letter saying they would and enclosed a cd with my concentration on it and even phoned me to clarify the names of my peices...but they never showed up. unless thye're on it now..haven't checked in a while

hhmm.. My concentrtion theme is women's image in the media, in our minds etc. I can't really put it in a few words, it's just kind of focusing on women and the hell we are put through to look pretty, different female icons from past to present, serious issues like body image and eating disorders etc.
Thats the first thing that came to my mind, I was also thinking of doing something like depression, sadness, fear.. something along those lines. Anyways good luck hun. I wish I could go to Emily Carr but i don't know if I'm good enough, anyways I couldnt afford it i'm guessing. They have fashion design there too, right? I might look into that.. |

emily carr is one of the most affordable art institutes around. and it's also one of the best. just ask robin. i think i might look into transferring there next year.
fashion design? you should look into Helen Lefaux....hard school to get into but if you get in, you're set. and also look into getting a scholarship at Parson's Institute of Fashion in New York. they have a campus in Paris as well. I applied to Parsons in New York but never sent in my portfolio. bev: my concentration was "surreal fashion photography"...which kinda killed me cuz i could only do photos...no other medium. but i did do digital imaging and i actually used pastel on some of my matte prints. i know what you mean though...it's so free and stuff that it's so hard to narrow down your subject. |
bev~ gooooood luck! I'd love to see your portfolio when it's done
I'm still not even close done my portfolio... I have about 4 good pieces, but I need more variety~ so in january I'm gonna go to kwantlen and take art, sculpture, photography and things like that and then hopefully transfer to Emily Carr~ :) |

breezy..rite back atcha
ure portfolio must be amazing... i can't wait to see it u goin to the emily carr portfolio day? IM DOIN A VELVET PAINTIN RITE NOW..its so fancy gonna start my first piece of concentration tomorrow...lino print making! yay! |

early december...crap i dont remember the date, but i should. check out the website for the exact date!
a present that ill have fun with?..hmmmmmmmm interesting im scared to show my portfolio to some stranger and have him/her pick at it in front of me! SHOULD BE FUN THOUGH. |
don't worry bev, it's not a dildo...it's conte crayon. it's my favorite medium to work with..it's so much fun...you can blend blend blend till the cows come home and you can get some nifty effects with it.
don't worry, at portfolio day, you'll probably only get to meet with one or two representatives from each school cuz the lineups are so fucking long. it's good to get some feedback though. some people...like the man from parsons...are harsh. they seem to get off on bashing other people's work. whatever floats their boat. it's still fun going though. |
conte crayon..interestingggg
hey wut other art schools are there in vancouver? im goin crazy now... went to post secondary day yesterday.. i have very few options for next year rite now. gettin into emily carr is scarin the crap outta me... |
there are a lot of art schools around...ubc and sfu all have fine arts programs...
but there's only 2 schools that i know of in canada that have specialized degree granting programs. see if you went to ubc and did their 4 year fine arts programe, you'd get a BA in Fine arts....but when i finish at Ryerson i'll have a BA in Photographic Fine Arts....it's a specialized degree. Ryerson and Emily Carr are the best schools for what you want to get into. |
i wish i was just more confident in gettin into emily carr so i could drop my unneccisary provincials and use the spare time to go all out on my portfolio... but sfu is a backup. i want my parents to win the lottery sosososo badly so i can go to ryersons.. i racked up so far one scholarship already! yayyyy 1000 dollars for me just cuz im a baller! lol woohoo
