cell service in mexico

has anyone ever tried this?

is it easier to grab a pay and talk local phone there? or just take calls on my phone?

With most companies now you have to let them know that youre in Mexico or theyll disconnect your phone to reduce the risk of your IMEI getting stolen.

I know that is the way it is with Bell at least. Not sure about Rogers.

I suggest a Calling card. If you make or recieve calls youll get charged, Roaming, Roaming Long Distance and Long Distance.

K, a good chunk of I do for work right now has to do with cellular coverage in Mexico (for real!)


Unreliable at best. Especially when you have a RIM device that isn't capable of roaming in analog mode.

But are you really really going to need to take calls on your phone when you're on vacation?

Rogers kinda prides itself on its global roaming capabilities (GSM and all that steez) so I doubt they'd do this kind of thing...

First of all, Mexico primarily has CDMA coverage. GSM coverage is prevalent in Europe, Asia, etc.

Secondly, there is an extremely high indidence of cellular fraud in mexico. The pre-authorization requirement for roaming in Mexico with MANY carriers isn't about limiting global roaming capabilities, its in the best interest of their clients.

i actually would choose to not take my phone. but it just so happens that my business partner is going to be in japan at the same time i will be in mexico. we have both been waiting for a phone call that is super important.

we are hoping that the phone call inconveniences us on vacation. anyone else that calls, is going to be killed.

you can get gsm coverage in mexico as there is still a network, I was just explaining to dave that Mexico isn't exclusively GSM :)

Bell and Telus are CMDA, whereas carriers that use SIM are GSM

also, i know the difference between gsm and cmda - i dont know what mexico has a better network for.

i guess i worry about the fraud. i have a blackberry that has my life on it. besides, i would rather have a local number in mexico, and have someone else pay for the long distance. :P

I was just trying to vouch for the likelihood that Rogers/Fido wouldn't restrict their users' roaming, not commenting on the exclusivity of GSM in the area....
