well my PC is fucked, little help please

ok i got the nasty "vista antivirus 2008" rouge malware virus and it pretty much raped my pc for a day. it installed through a video codec

I pretty much have it all repaired program is killed, the reg is killed, its all off 100%.

the thing is firefox, IE, and notepad do not open at all, and internet will not work. Im not sure how to repair file/exe associations in the registry.

any fix-all way to "fix" this or do i have to backup-reformat-reinstall all my shit?

*edits* fine watever, heres your solution you gomer.

go into your windoes file, find a sketchy looking .dll with no description

rename it...then reboot you computer.

find the renamed sketchy .dll and delete it.

problem solved.

esoteric(ret.) was the only guy EVER to be able to solve it.

If you haven't reformatted yet, try run a repair first. Boot from the CD (DO NOT go into the recovery console), and after you agree to the licensing agreement, it'll ask if you want to repair your current copy of Windows.

If that doesn't fix anything, you're shit out of luck and will have to reformat.

reformatting with my new shiny 500 gig sata drive tonight. I was planning on going back to 32 bit windows xp anyway.

I wouldn't really know, last time I reformatted a Windows machine it was Win98SE.

Don't usually see a reformat take longer than an hour on my box. Drivers all come automagically, installing auxiliary programs is a snap, preferences stay on unformatted /home partition so I don't even have to touch those.

Plug-N-Play is usually just referring to Windows environments. Joy of OSS is that you get ALL the drivers on the fly, even non-pnp devices. It's just a matter that a lot of the bleeding-edge tech stuff doesn't have proper support.

Only issues I've ever had are with ATI drivers, but from what I understand they're not doing so well in the windows camp either. The OSS drivers work fantastic for what I want to do.
