buy canadian - drink local beer

no, not molson, this isn't for the frat boy crowd. let's talk real domestic/ micro brew type beers. there's tonnes out there, and i find local selection is getting better.

Personal favorite right now.

Dead Frog - Nut brown ale (Aldergrove, BC)... Seriously delicious beer, with chocolate and espresso notes. Its hard to imagine the flavour of this beer unless you've tried it, but nut brown ales aren't uncommon.

Oh and Pacific Pilsner (Prince George, BC) is the best cheap beer you can get a 6pk for under $10... It looks like old man beer, but it flavor wise it surpasses kokanee, molson, etc...

Fair enough, I'm not a huge fan but it's not bad.

first off, not trying to start an argument on beer, cause that's gay. flavor is subjective. I find kokanne to be a really shitty beer. those kokanee girls don't make the beer taste better... clearly marketing makes it seem like a better beer. canadian is at least drinkable, but there are far superior lagers and draughts out there.

pick up a 6 of pacific pil, if you've never tried it.

You'll hear no argument from me on the price vs taste of local beers. It's just I was not expecting to see Pacific Pilsner on a list of the best local beers :)

Dead Frog struck me as a not-quite-complete attempt to create a dark smokey German lager. Granville Island Brewing did a far better job with their Black beer. Their 1516 lager has been in high rotation in and out of my fridge.

Not enough people know about the tastiness of Keith's in cans. Seriously. Try it. IMHO it taste better in the can than out of the bottle. I know that sounds like something a jackass would claim, but I defy you to find a better canned Canadian / domestic* beer.

*Canadian / domestic only. I don't want some beer snob stating the obvious fact that Guinness / Kilkenny / Boddingtons also comes in cans.

Buddy from work introduced me to Bowen Island Pale Ale and it was really quite good (and cheap, too!)

Last week I bought a large bottle of Howe Sound Breweries Best Bitter ("A bitter beer for bitter times"!)and it was really quite nice! Comes w/ a Grolsch-style re-sealable top.

Can't say I fancy anything from Granville Island. I've tried and tried over the years, but, I just don't like the taste of their products.

My default choice is still Okanagan Springs Pale Ale.

Yeah, Bowen Island is probably the best cheap beer I've found in Vancouver. Also a fan of anything brewed by Phillips (esp. Phoenix Gold Lager)

I tried a couple of rice based beers at Eat Vancouver (one Turkish (Efes?) and one Chinese (Yangshing?)) ... they were both great!

Obviously not "local" though..

I did try something called "Dead Guy Ale", I think that was local. It was good too, although a bit of a funky flavour, maybe I was tasting the dead guy.

^ did it taste like over-ripe bananas? cause that's what dead people smell like.

On a side note, buy local wine too. I recommend Sandhill Cab/merlot blend. It's great. And little-to-no carbon footprint either.

down with the pacific, 24x $30 unbeatable. beer for the troops! I got a small collection of back packs in my closet.

hands down my #1 Canadian brewery is Unibroue. summer beer of choice; Apple Éphémère (or a bottle of Fin 9%), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unibroue (if your new try the 12x mingler, $21 at any 'large' BCL, $28 CBW)

phillips phoenix is a solid beer if you can find it (subeez, some BCL) but I've found phillips beer in general is hit or miss with other beer fans. I also rather like their grizzly blond (sp?) 9%

once in awhile Steamworks has a microbrew cherry 9% which is outstanding. gotta find them at the right time and only by the pint, legally they 'say' they can't serve it by the pitcher.

Pretty sure you can't get this in Vancouver, but if you ever happen to be in Duncan stop by the Craig Street Brewpub, right next to Just Jake's. Hops and barley from all over the Cowichan Valley. Probably some of the tastiest beer I've ever had. Highly recommend the porter.

Steamworks has another seasonal beer they bring out in the fall for Thanksgiving/Hallowe'en.

It's pumpkin beer. As weird as it sounds, it's like drinking your desert. Very strange, but, surprisingly really good and quite popular. They will sell 2l bottles for take-away for you dinner gatherings.

Worth trying, if you remember to in 5 months...

watch out for that jam.
