question about downloading

how many megabytes or whatever are you allowed to download a month before shaw calls you and tells you to piss off?

i've been raping that mixingbowl.org website for the past few days and would like to know when to expect my phone call :)

I think we got the phone call after downloading gigs of movies and music. Not sure how much though. They can be bitches once you've surpassed your limit, Good luck :)

One gig is nothing, you shouldn't be worried about that. Don't quote me though

With the basic Shaw package it is 7 GB download and 2 GB upload.

With the Shaw Extreme package it is 50 GB download and upload combined.

I used to have Telus and I noticed that they never warned or charged me. I was ALWAYS over (by A LOT) and never got any warnings or had to pay any extra.

yup, Firewire is correct with Telus

Its supposed to be "5 gig download, 1gig upload per month"

On average, i do around 40-60 gb of uploads per month, since i run a server, Been doing this for 4+ years. Telus has never said a thing

SHAW can kiss my ass, as none of our money goes to them anymore..I HATE their services. Currently on Bell ExpressVU for tv/HDTV and Telus for phone and internet

think i have the basic deal but not sure...
whatever i have.. is 20gig per month (upload and download combined)
and it took using 115gigs over two months for them to call

they were saying they would cut the internet if it kept up at that rate
you can monitor how much your using at secure.shaw.ca

Go to secure.shaw.ca, and have a recent bill ready.

There is an internet usage chart on here somewhere, and after you've set up an account, you can come here and see how much you've been using.

I always thought the limit was 40GB down, as this is what a Shaw representative told me, and each time I went over that, I'd come home to a disabled modem.

I'm now on Telus, and I don't think I'd switch back.

if you don't have a shaw email, they can't contact you to 'warn you' of your exceeded bandwith.

you can also just go find a bandwidth monitor program

They don't seem to have a "Modem Usage" link there anymore.
I notice they now let you have 10 email/web accounts now, each web account is 10 MB, previously it was 7 accounts.

The 'Modem Usage' link is there, I'm looking at it right now. Although if you've never registered an @shaw.ca email/webspace account you won't see it.

Since @Shaw provided internet I've always had 10 email addy's available, but now they upped the Webspace Account from 10mb to 20mb's space. And instead of 10MB limit on each email account, it has been changed to 100MBs

I just checked my usage with Telus and I've consistently been at about 400% my allowable BW for the past 6 months.... not one call.

Telus is pretty lax when it comes down to it.

Wierd - I've been using those extra accounts for 5+ years so am registered but it still doesn't show the modem usage link. But it looks like they increased my webspace to 20 MB in the last week or so :) - good for posting little videos or a few mp3sl, although it would be better if they just let us have one big 200 MB webspace instead of 10 little ones.

***EDIT*** someone said in another forum that sometimes you need to email Shaw to get them allow you to see the modem usage link.

For all those speaking about how relaxed TELUS is, that was probably because up until this year they had never bothered to even monitor usage. Now that they have customers have been segregated depending on usage and they have started warning, but they are starting from the top and working their way down... so if you are a little over it will be a while before you receive any sort of warning.
