being a finalist in a worldwide writing contest
holy fucking shit. i had to blab this news because both my parents are at work and i have to tell someone.
a few weeks ago i entered a writing contest for the summer literary seminars that are held in st. petersberg russia each summer for a month. the first place winner got airfare and a full tuition waiver to the seminars, second place got just tuition, third place got a part-tuition waiver, and finalists also got part-tuition waivers of varying degrees. margaret atwood was the finalist fiction judge. so they received over 1,200 entries from around the world...and i just got an email today saying that both my stories were finalists (i submitted two) and that they're giving me a spot in the seminars and paying for 20% of my tuition if i want it. anyway, i'm not trying to brag or anything at all...i'm just pretty shocked by all of this. email: Dear Jake Garrett, Thank you for participating in the SLS/St. Petersburg-06 annual literary contest. We at SLS were greatly impressed by the strength and overall quality of your work -- the terrific stories "Outer Space" and "How Not to Disappear Completely" -- and would like to offer you a fellowship in the amount of 20% off the program tuition cost. Please let us know if that is something you might be interested in. If you choose to accept this offer, please reply by April 15. As much as we would like to have you in the program, it fills up very quickly, and we can't guarantee places will be open for long. We look forward to hearing from you. All Best, SUMMER LITERARY SEMINARS St. Petersburg, Russia/Nairobi, Kenya www.sumlitsem.org ps: we at sls greatly enjoyed your stories. powerful, compelling, beautifully achieved writing. both were among our favorites -- and the contest finalists. thank you for letting us see your work. mikhail iossel sls director FUCK! now i have to decide if i can go! |
