- "Tom Jeffery's aka TJ Hooker love of music was obvious at a very young age; while his peers were busy playing Zelda, Tom was playing Frank Zappa records on his dad's Technics sl-1000. TJ's passion for music lead him to the drum kit, where his early rock and jazz influences were on display full throttle. Tom's desire to expand his musical horizons introduced him to hip-hop and Graffiti, which consumed him until the day he got his copy of the seminal electronic album by Daft Punk, "Homework". Things were never the same after that...
Tom started to hit the scene hard in 1999, enjoying a wide spectrum of electronic genres at various events. TJ had yet to find a sound that really moved him, that was until he discovered the club nights
"Overproof" and "Deepen" at the Lotus Sound Lounge in 2003. Tom's love of all things house was born, and it was at these nights where he developed an ear for quality electronic music.
By 2006, Tom was getting discouraged by VanCity's electronic music scene; it seemed harder and harder to find the underground house sound that he loved. In response to this growing frustration Tom picked up his first set of turntables and decided to himself become a purveyor of that sound. With some well-timed guidance from local house crusaders Jay Tripwire and Tom Thomas behind him, TJ has undertaken the valiant mission of delivering proper house music to the masses. His sound can only be described as driving dance music. Tom is known play anything from dark trippy tech house, to soulful techno. His style is more suited for the club than the couch, while at the same time containing enough substance to keep the discerning house heads happy.
It seems that the party people still love their house music, as Tom's approach to electronic has been extremely well received, as is shown by the impressive list of venues and events he has been booked to play in Vancouver since 2007. The Lotus Sound Lounge, Anza Club, Gorgomish, Red Room, Waldorf, Pop Opera, and Majestic are just a few notables on TJs already loaded resume, having played alongside such well known and respected peers as Limacon, the Lawnchair Generals, Jay Tripwire, Luke Mckeehan, Mieka Du Franx, and Mike McSeude to name but a few. Tom also holds down two weekly residence in VanCity, The much coveted spot at Switch Saturday nights at the Red Room, where his sounds destroy the 400+ party people on the dance floor in the main room on the regular and the infamous Hollywood Fridays at Lotus sound lounge which is known to be Vancouver last good underground night. If that wasn't enough, he is throwing some of Vancouver's most underground warehouse party's under the name of "Subversive Productions" with partner in crime Jay Tripwire.
TJ's unique mix of house and techno took years of musical exploration to develop, and it was well worth the wait as the results are impressive. Purposeful programming accompanied by pinpoint mixing and taste making track selection are what to expect from one of Tom's sets, showcasing bass driven underground grooves that will get any dancefloor moving."
