Now that's what I call a party. - Halloween was a blast. Thank you to everyone that came out, those that were there know it was something special ;). A big shout-out to my man Myles Bigelow for laying some sick Afro Cuban grooves on top of my set. Intense!!!! I’d have to say this was my favorite ‘Get Together’ yet! Next one is scheduled for New Years. Last Thursday (long weekend)the legend Donald Glaude came to Tokyo Lounge, he stepped on just after 1:00. Rev and I dropped some electro funk goodness to start the night off right. He’s quite an entertainer with his hands in the air; scratching with his face…The place was going crazy! Photos can be seen below! It was great to see a lot of faces there that I knew! Some out of the woodwork, COREY, JAMES! This month I have a good buddy Shawn Ward featured, he's been a busy guy. Although he's off to Mexico mighty quick, you can check him out November.17th @ Overproof (that's at the Lotus), to send him off right. Read about Shawn Below. I’ve included a production tip in this newsletter, and will continue to do so every month. There’re a lot of tricks that I’ve got in my head, so I might as well share them with everyone. I was featured in a online magazine "Beyond Robson" last month, Check out the quick interview here You can also checkout the trailer for a game music I worked on 'Super Mario Strikers' here. Video One features some music that I made for the title.Launch Video Here. Upcoming shows to checkout… Bassnector will be @ Richards on Dec.9th, put on by TwentyHz. Blueprint has the Tiefschwarz @ Shine, for an intimate Christmas party Dec.19th. Vivid has LTJ Bukem and Mc Conrad, Jan 21st @ Commodore. Of course all Saturdays at Red room for Believe are always off the hook as well. Shawn Ward - Featured Local Artist Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, Shawn Ward is a musician, producer, and DJ. He began his music career at age 7, taking 8 years of classical piano training, and later learned guitar from his Dad. Proving his musical skills and passion to produce, his first EP "In The City" on Turbo Recordings was released in 2001 to critical acclaim. Tracks from the EP appear numerous com`pilation CDs, including Tim Fielding's Journey By DJs and Timmy Regisford's One Night at Club Shelter NYC. Since then, Shawn has quickly built up an impressive catalog and following, with strong releases on European and US house labels such as Polyphonics, Tweekin, Blockhead, Sensei, Fabergé, and Elevation, and has recently received excellent exposure in the house scene for his releases on the legendary Nottingham label DiY Discs, as well as Dallas-based Fair Park, and the popular new Flat & Round imprint. Rob Anhofer AKA. Aklimatize It's been known for peeps to check themselves after they realised they were grinding to filthy re-edits of The Beatles and The Clash by this producer/DJ from Vancouver, Canada, but if you've ever lost yourself on a tropical dancefloor, amid a haze of smoke and hypnotic riddims, chances are you were flexing to the Aklimatize bounce. Future Elements Recordings is proud to introduce and release music from one of Canada's freshest brokenbeat producers. In demand, with a busy year recording and DJing from Puerto Rico to Italy, Barcelona to Miami, this talented artist has an EP in the works with the Puerto Rican label Amalgama, a remix compilation forthcoming for Future Elements , successful releases with Moody Allen and Flying High Records Netherlands, remixes for Fidgital under his BS moniker and numerous projects forming worldwide. Last year was spent representing Canada in production sessions with Zed Bias of Phuturistix, Ommas Keith of SA:RA and a talented cast of international delights in Rome at the Red Bull Music Academy. Throw in a Daz-I-Kue/Col. Red remix for Bugz in the Attic and we know your speakers will be pouring more love from this talented producer in the upcoming years. Aklimatize's melds the afro-latino presha with the bruk and soul . With undertones of a Detriot sound, he brings some exclusive heat from his travels through Europe to South America with a dancefloor directed sound. -Ay Calor! Hear what industry pro's are saying about Rob's work! "Throwing the Latino vibes and a bit of Puerto Rican into the broken, this tune is set to rock the westsides of any city. Col Red - Soon Come (Aklimatize Remix) Production Tips.. Sampling 101 or 102, 103, 104... So what are samplers? an instrument that can capture and play back other sounds. The first sampler was relased in 1963, the mellontron keyboard. It was built on the array of 70 + tape machines. A separate tape player was connected to each individual key. Then came the rolands, the akais, the emus’, and the digital revolution!! Nowadays a lot still stick to the hardware; but I personally like the flexibility, massive libraries and ease of use, of soft-samplers like KONTAKT, Battery, or the EX24mk2 in logic. Tracking Tracking is when you take a recorded sound, and stretch it along an array of keys, so that it’s pitch and or time corresponds to the keys you play. For example... if you play up the keys, the samples pitch goes up, if you play down, the samples pitch goes down. Its an easy way to tune your *instrument* to a song, if the original sample is in a different key. Loop Start, End, Loop Tricks Quick trick for getting neat effects for vocals, pads or anything you want to experiment in. Load a sample into your soft-sampling program... Set a loop point so that if you hold down a key, it will loop from start to end, and re-loop the sample until you release the key. In programs such as Kontakt you can set a sample envelope on the release function so that it doesn’t stop abruptly when letting go of the keys. *Trick: Try assigning your loop end points value to a midi controller, so that as you hold down the key and turn your midi knob, it will adjust the loops length, either retracting it or expanding it... you can get neat stutter effects, and or interesting rhythms and movement in pads by doing this. Support from Jamie Anderson, Phil K, Dan Mangan and more. Keep it locked to pickup the first release on many online retailers. The Function Kevin and Roxy met around 3 years ago and had a mutual love for both music and each other. Together they started writing music not really knowing what sound they could call their own. Having moved away from Vancouver for a couple years they really started discovering a sound that they both enjoyed and wanted to apply to their own music. Kevin found inspiration from older jazz and funk music particularly from keyboard players such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Quincey Jones to name a few. A particular sound intrigued his ears that kept on surfacing amoung newer brokenbeat records. That sound was the sound of older analog synths in the hands of jazz musicians. Roxy took the same direction with her vocals listening to the greats like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Marvin Gaye. She spent many hours practicing singing, learning scales and harmonies as well as learning jazz and theory before continuing on to record more tracks and take her vocal skills to the next level. Now it has been 2 years since anybody has heard anything from this duo..... Kevin and Roxy are back to showcase there new sounds in the form of Brokenbeat’s and Nujazz. Stay tuned for upcoming releases under Vancouver’s first and only Brokenbeat label Future Elements, and Borderline Collective. April News and da Bombs
April’s been a great month, lots of sun, lots of music, great talent through the city, and positive energy everywhere, possibly because of summer coming, or just the moon is lining up with the tidal waves… yeah.. that’s it ;).
Some wicked shows were played the past 30 days, first off Gorgomish was a gong show, packed eye to eye, lots of disco bass being thrown down by Julian Chow and Myself... and tight attendance, quality peeps!! Doing that again on April 28th for THE SHOWDOWN! Monthly featuring Myself and Guests. Last Saturday Lee Burridge, Myself and Tyler Lewis severely welted the bass at the Red Room. Thanks to Ph1, Blueprint and Believe for hosting the cities finest event this year. Lee stays true to his sound, pushing quality music, with the humor that goes along with it. Pics can be seen below! Infusion from Australia came into town, and showed us all how it’s done the live way at Plaza Nightclub after I got off the decks. Thanks to Jamie, Frank and Manuel for being such solid performers and having class light years beyond us all ;). Some bloke Phil K was in town as well, wicked show at the Lotus with Luke Chable. Rough dirty bass with tight drums all tight.. Showing us all how to push the envelope. Pics from Infusion below. It was the Aussie invasion weekend, so who better to feature than one of their mates, Dan Mangan the radio host on KissFM, Triple J, head of A an R for Trojan Records (Luke Chable’s Label). New Tracks on Trojan Records linked for your listening pleasure., and a 30min mini mix with a Paul Keeley Borderline Collective tune in it. Thanks to Nathan Hall for having me down to Addiction, nice mixed crowd, and felt good to feel like I was converting people. Pics are below. Till Next Month! Borderline Collective Myspace - Kyle Nordman Myspace Dan Mangan Dan Started off in High School working a stint at a local record distributor, Mushroom Distribution Services. A steady career in I.T was on the cards until one day Frank G, the man that Dan blames for everything since, handed him a pile of records and asked him if he had turntables. “No” was Dan’s response. “Get some” was Frank’s. From here, it all unfolds with a tedious inevitability… Skip to 2001 - Australia's national youth radio network; Triple J. The gig was broadcast live to air on the Saturday night “Mix-Up” show from Revolver Nightclub in Prahran, Melbourne. This was his first public gig ever and about a minute before he had to go on, he was informed that about half a million people would be listening to him. Since then, Dan Mangan hasn’t just established himself in Melbourne's evergrowing scene, he’s grown to become one it’s leading DJ’s who’s sound is as upfront as it is diverse. In five short years, he’s used his versatility and technical skill as a DJ to warm up, hype up or wind up a night, and has racked up (residencies) at club nights like Out Of Order, Fractured, Escape, Fuji, The Late Show, Broken Home, PreSSure, Quality Control, Q-Bar and Sunny. His name can found amongst the fine-print on flyers with names like Infusion, Nubreed, EK, Tayo, Adam Freeland, Anthony Pappa, Danny Howells, James Lavelle and many many more. Dan’s immediate circle are luminaries such as Phil K, Luke Chable, Keltec, Ivan Gough, Nubreed, Andy Page and Sean Quinn, so he’s was extremely lucky to have the odd chance to pick up a production trick or two. As a result, some of his tracks have found their way to the public on imprints such as 3Beat Breaks, Heavy Rotation, Vicious Vinyl, Audiotherapy, Trojan Records and CP Recordings. In June 2005, Sean Quinn invited Dan to co-host a daily show on Melbourne's freshly revived KissFM. Called Space Between The Beats. With a music policy based around new music it’s the station’s highest rating show, and guests have included Dave Seaman, Nic Fanciulli, Trentemoller, Satoshi Tomiie, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge and many more. Tune all the way to the left at 87.6FM, or stream via the internet from http://www.kissfm.com.au weekdays from 2-4pm to catch the show. March 2006 Dan was invited to keep Kid Kinobe’s seat warm at Triple J while he went on tour for four weeks and present the first hour of the show he was ‘unearthed’ on in the first place: the Mix-Up. Only since that mid-2001 night, the listenership of the Mix-Up had jumped to an average of 700,000. Just so he made sure he absolutely no time left whatsoever, in March 2006 Dan took up the role of A&R for Luke Chable's record label, Trojan Records.
