Funk/Soul/Ol Skool/Big Beat

I have been digging alot lately and have listened (not bought) to alot of records which fall into this category. I was always scared to venture into these sub genres b/c well I dont need anymore diferent sounds in my bag. I also thought this stuff was hard to find btu it seems liek there is an abundance of it at used places.

If anyone could help me with artists, track names, resources for learning about the music, and record distributors please add your comments.....Wigglesworth, Precise, Help a brother out.

This would be better to do in person but first off look no futher then ULTIMATE BEATS AND BREAKS.
this series came out in the mid 80's and has almost every old school funk sampled track somewhere. Its about 25 records in the series i believe. Not all of the series are good, but some of them are pure platinum.

Start with that and you're well on your way.
Research sites like the-breaks.com and look up on google world of beats (forget the adress.)

email me at [email protected] if you want to know more.

hrmmm. Big beat is kinda hard to find. Look up Wiseguys, Scanty Sandwich, Wax Assassins, fatboy slim, Skeewiff, old KRafty Kuts etc..etc..
That should set you on you way for a little. Check back and Ill hook you up with more.

As for the old school, old school.. I just started getting original classics lately ie. Eddie Grant- Electric Avenue, Zapp- More bounce to the ounce, Steppenwolf- Magic Carpet Ride, etc....

gotta lay down these babies soon :c-tard:

Can't wait to hear those mixes this Friday Ryan!

Freskanova used to be a good Big Beat label.... run by the Freestylers if i'm not mistaken. look out for that stuff in the used shops... also the Heavenly label used to put out some sick big beat jams, Monkey Mafia did some interesting party tracks for them. Concrete was a good label too, i belive Dub Pistols got their start on that one.

on the new tip, i just can't say enough good things about Fort Knox!! They've only got 3 releases so far but goddamn they're HOT!! check em out if you haven't already, we keep them in stock as much as we can @ Boomtown.

the first break beat records that I bought were Freskanova singles. I'll bring some for you on friday cuz I don't play them very often...

Matt if your getting into bigbeat your gonna have to make a trek into the other end of fleetwood one of these days...

Oldschool wise think Arthur Baker and Eddie Grant. As goes for bigbeat, if you're just digging crates don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for some acid breaks and chemical breaks. These styles were all kin in some manner at the time when Chemical Brothers and Cirrus were ruling shit when bigbeat was still juvenile. Soul Hooligan (the older the funkier), Krafty Kuts (again, the older the funkier), labels like Skint, Dust2Dust and freskanova all have a huge oldschool following.

Deejay Punk Roc, Ursula 1000, Mint Royale and Daddy have been pushing shit lately and all you gotta do is watch any fucking car commercial and you will be IMHO properly submerged.

Yeah Mark I dig the old acid stuff, The 303 does wonders. But i find it would mix well with alot of the nu breaks i have boguth over the past year or so..

I was more looking in the direction of big beat stuff and the funk in general.
