Soapstone Pipes

I just picked up a soapstone pipe a few days ago, and noticed some easy marking and chipping...no big deal as long as you are careful, right? Anyway, I was talking to my sister and brother-in-law and they said that soapstone pipes are bad to smoke. They couldnt remember why, but it got me curious.

So, anyone know anything about soapstone pipes?

soapstone is not a very hard stone and if you've worked with it in woodshop or whatever in high school, its a pretty porus and easy to crumble stone. i can imagine the heat causeing the stone to release some fumes or break down somehow.

i highly doubt using soapstone is unsafe..its been a pretty popular form of pipe..and i would have heard something about im an avid reader of high times....but anyway...i have a soap stone pipe right now...i got it for christmas in this sweet black case all line with like purple velvet inside...the pipe is a two piece where you screw the bowl in and i took it outside my house one day and i had it in my pocket and it popped out and a good half inch piece broke off from the houth piece down...i still have the piece and someone was saying there was a special glue that i oculd use to fix it but its a pain in the ass and becuz the stone heats pretty easily im not too sure if the glue will still be able to withstand it.....

if youre going to use soapstone pipes leisurely like around the house then thats cool but i wouldn't recommend using then outside the house not something you wanna carry around..if its a larger one like the one i have...the bowl is also all dinged up so keep the shit indoors....i like em still though becuz there so smooth and yet really sharp looking....stylish that is...
