Hydromorphone

Well, I have just been prescribed Hydromorphone for the torn muscles in my right arm. Normally, Codeine is prescribed for these situations, but apparently, I have a cool doctor.

Now, abusing pharmaceuticals isn't of much interest to me, but Dilaudid can have up to 8 times the painkilling power of Morphine!

Has anyone had any experience?

hydromorphone is 10 times the strength of morphine. so 10mg of is equivalent to about 100mg of morphine.

strange, i was talking about this with my aunt earlier.

whatever you do, dont snort it, you'll most likely OD. just take whatever ur supposed to and 40 minutes later smoke a joint, find a couch and stare at something... i got a bunch of percocets, which i only use for when i got extreme headaches or pain, they are wikkid. BUT these opiates are highly addictive, and easy to OD if snorted because everyone varies in tolerance.

Hmm, well it said on Erowid that it is 2 to 8 times as powerful as Morphine. Close enough I guess.

contrary to what a lot of people believe, the amount of people getting addicted to opioid anagelsics after using them for pain, is actually quite low.

and even if it ever got to a point where they were dependent on it, there's still a difference between dependence and addiction.

remember, if you're on hydromorphone, it's really important to slowly ween yourself off of it to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

I've never heard of that stuff... although after my Appendix was taken out the Doctors had me on Morphine for awhile. I could hardly imagine what 8 times stronger would be like. :toasted:

generally, orthopoedic injuries and surgeries are LOT more painful than surgeries like appendectemies.

and also, it's not like they'll give the same dose of morphine as they would with hydromorphine.

for example, the usual adult dosage range for morphine IV therapy is 0.5-2.5 mg, where as for hydromorphone, it is 0.05-0.4 mg.

Yes good points, but its still important to let them know about the dangers, the withdrawel symptoms can be quite bad.

oh yeah, definitely.

but I think in many cases, people realize the addictive properties opioid analgesics and so the problem ends up being that people would rather not take them in fear of getting addicted. so I find it's always important to teach people both sides of the coin.

impure is a jewel in the roughimpure is a jewel in the roughimpure is a jewel in the roughimpure is a jewel in the rough
sooooooooo
what doctor was that?
i think i tore a muscle.
LOL
dilaudeds are the shiznat although i have never tried hydromorphone it's certainly on my list of things to do
IV morphine was wonderful, too bad i was in too much pain to truly enjoy it.
then came the nitrous (morphine does SHIT for pain by the way)
and morphine took a back seat to my new best friend, the gas mask.

sad but true, i was STOKED about getting my wisdom teeth removed purely because i was promised iv morphine and valium!!
oh the pleasure.

i find that if i want something semi mild to enable me to enjoy a funciton in which i must tolerate large groups of my family in one room, ie Chrismats dinner, i take a few T3's with codine and down several glasses of champagne.
my aunt first dosed me like that when i was 15, not on purpose of course, i did have an 'injured' back at the time, or so she thought.
