Extacy & Prozac could stop cancer cell growth

Drugs such as Ecstasy and Prozac could stop cancer cell growth.

Scientists from the University of Birmingham found the drugs were effective at blocking cancer growth in more than half of lymphoma (white blood cell cancer) samples tested.

It is hoped the findings will will lead to new cancer therapies reports BBC online.

The study focused on 17 samples of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and multiple myeloma. Cancer growth was slowed down in nine out of the 17 samples when they were exposed to antidepressants, and in 11 out of 17 when exposed to one or both of the amphetamine derivatives.

Researcher Professor John Gordon said: "We think that a range of psychotropic agents that are being used, or sometimes abused, for other reasons will now help us in our fight against all different types of cancer.

"We are excited that drugs like Prozac are effective in killing these types of cancer cells, as these antidepressants are in such wide circulation and have an impressive safety record."

However, the use of ecstasy was not so straightforward - the dose required to block cancer growth was so high it would kill the patient.

Dr Nick Barnes said he hoped the drug could be used to combat cancer in the future.

He said: "Perhaps by breaking down the actions of this designer drug we can extract its cancer killing properties from more general toxic effects associated with its use.

personally, i think its a line of poo-poo. most terminal cancer patients are on anti-depressents. if they cured\had a positive effect you'd think the "terminal" part of the label would no longer be there. maybe they do injections directly to the sight of the cells\tumor, but with cancers like lukemia that almost seems impossible.

why aren't they investing more time into things like mistle toe extract, iscador? or avemor? these have the same success rate if not better then mdma, yet studies have almost halted. then theres the fact that there are treatment for cancers that havent been accpeted by our government yet, but are accepted in other countries - in some cases other provinces.

again, want to prevent cancer? live happy and healthy. stay out of the sun, eat right, exercise\stay fit. dont smoke. take up practicing things like yoga, have a happy spirit.

Scientists are trying to find reasons to legalize a drug that is highly defective...
the reason why no one in the right mind will legalize a drug like that (regardless its proven theories to date)... for every good thing theres another 30 that have been undiscovered. Imagine the Class Action Lawsuit that can be filed on the pharmaceutical company that made and distributed the drug. Itd be the biggest Big Tort case to date, meaning the pharaceutical company would loose atleast 1 Billion to a lawyer, and another 20 Billion to victims that want to get a settlement.

EDIT:
Why wont they just let the street pharmacists do their fucking job?!
