Ecstasy, Myth or Fact?
I did a lot of reading about ecstasy, what it does, how it affects your body, mind, all the side affects and everything. Dancesafe.org has the ecstasy slideshow which was a very cool thing to read about. But I was in Richmond the other day and I ended up getting in this conversation about drugs with the waitress, she said that ecstasy affects a certain part of your brain making it very difficult to create new memories, does anyone know of a resource where I can read about this? and is it true or not? I have so much trouble remembering thing's now, peoples names etc... so I'm just wandering if there is anything I can do about this. Yes I know, STOP DOING DRUGS! I've already begun doing that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about E making it difficult to make new memories, but I have noticed that my memory has changed for the worse since I tried E.
I noticed that I do have to make an effort to remember to do things and my short term memory is great, but I blame that on all the alcohol I used to drink. I also noticed that my thought processes have changed as well. I 'feel' that my reaction times to most situations is not as quick as they used to be. I posed the question a while back of 'If you had a choice, would you have done E knwoing what you know now?'. I do admit that the experience is quite pleasurable, but I personally would have passed on E if I had the knowledge I have now. Please remember that this is my opinion on this subject. Yours and other peoples might be entirely different. |

maybe what she meant by "not being able to create new memories" was that it affects your memory.. making it worse.. therefore it's harder to create new memories of what happens.
i mean if it affects your memory, from what i know, it doesn't make you forget old happenings usually, but its' just harder to remember new things.. therefore no newer memories.. |

Here is my friends logic in taking E:
I'm told that drinking alcohol destroys brain cells. From the amount of alcohol I have comsumes in my lifetime so far, half my brain should be missing. There isn't much left to screw up. Anyway, I had short term memory issues when I was drinking. I don't know if E has made it any worse. |

if it were to affect memory, it's probably affecting the part of the brain called the hippocampus, which is apparently responsible for controlling memory.
now, scientists have done studies on people who have parts of their brain destroyed and found that there are different areas of the brain that are responsible for creating new memories and remembering old ones separate. only problem is, they're not exactly sure where those areas are. so I don't see how your friend could've heard that e can cause you to prevent new memories from forming, when not much is even known about the part that creates new memories! but then again, scientists are making miraculous discoveries daily and I could be totally not up to date with what's happening. now also, keep in mind that scientists don't know everything about the brain and they don't know everything about ecstasy, making the research occuring right now, not completely valid. ecstasy, apparently hasn't even been around for too right now now and so it's long term effects have yet to be determined. best thing you can do to find new and up to date information is read those monthly/weekly scholarly journals on the proper topics or perhaps look up EDUCATIONAL sites on the internet. there's a lot of trash that goes on via the web and you can't believe everything you hear. --Joanne :p |

I don't know about new memories but old ones, yeah. Like really old ones , like how the hell to talk properly. It's disturbing how much one person can say "that thingy" and "you know" in one sentance.
Lindsey I will ewok dance on your head, you yub nub! |

with the amount of alcohol I used to consume every 3rd or 4th day, I should be completely brain dead. Spunsugar(don't you think 'Princess Mononoke' was a dope movie?) That's my favorite Anime movie right now.. that or.. Blood the last vampire.
BTW.. I know it affects your memory but to tell you the truth.. I can't even remember how bad my memory was before I started doing drugs, I know it wasn't very good, but I also don't think it was this bad(I've lost a lot of vocabulary now because I can't remember words.) |

if i remember correctly (and i might not), the aftereffects of mdma use is hypothesized to damage serotonin receptors. there is some evidence for this happening in animals, although the extent of the damage or its longevity is unknown. there has been no evidence of this in humans to date, likely because direct experimental research has been stalled up until very recently, and nobody really knows what kind of practical behavioural effects the damage would exhibit. the bottom line is that nobody really knows, although i personally would be surprised if occasional mdma use would have any major deleterious effects on cognitive functioning.
