I'm def not closed minded about music, so if you have stuff that's better then the stuff on the radio - bring it on.

as for what does history have to do with it... bands like metallica, dream theater, iron maiden and smashing pumpkins have all stated they have been heavily influenced by them. the band has more than left a footprint in musical history, especially canadian music.
you may think they play shitty music but obviously a great number of people think otherwise.
I'm nowhere near the biggest Rush fan, but I have great respect for what they've done. I own four of their records and a three live DVD set, though I've only paid money for one CD ("Tom Sawyer" kicks ass, and its use in Futurama agrees). Regardless, you could say I'm a fan and you've virtually met me, as well as several others in this thread.

Conversely, I've met plenty of Akon fans in my day (and I wish I hadn't met a single one), but that doesn't mean he makes great music. He rapes and beats teenagers on stage, and his CDs are horribly banal and completely forgettable. He has not nor will ever influence anyone of worth, only more pop rapist urophiliacs.

i agree that just because they sell records, doesnt mean they have good music. but record sales is the most accurate measure we have. not necessarily measure of talent but measure of .. well demand if you will. because i gurantee there are musicians out there with ten times more talent than even rush yet receive no recognition likely because their style of music has little demand. (i repent for saying this but it is true)

as for akon... i think thats a poor analogy because imo it takes a great deal more experience and talent to play in a band of this calibre than it does to produce simple hiphop beats and sings the same chorus over it for 4 minutes. not saying producing is easy but i know people that make better tunes than him that have only produced for 2 years. akon can suck it.

That's odd... I actually agree with you. :)

IMO music coming out today (I'm talking about top 40 etc) isn't going to have any kind of impact. I actually have this argument with a friend of mine all the time. He loves Akon and all that other crap, he seems to think that they are selling millions of records right now so they are more of an influence then say... Pink Floyd. What he doesn't get is that they are selling millions of records right now. Pink Floyd has been doing it for how long? I wasn't born until 1983 and I still go out and buy their music as will millions of other people in there teens, 20's, 30's etc... so it's all well and good that Akon is selling a million records right now, but in 30 years do you think we will be talking about Akon? Do you think we will even remember him? Do you think he will still be selling records? No.

As far as Rush goes. I'm not going to take anything away from them - they are VERY talented. I'm sure they have made a huge impact on music today. However, not my thing. And most people I know will agree with me. Like I said, if you have something that you think can turn me into a Rush lover then I would love to hear it! I'm always open to finding new music that I love.

Agreed. But like I said, will they be selling records in 30 years? Will they stand the test of time. Rush obviously did - or we wouldn't be in this post now would we?

im sure out of 19 albums theres at least one song that can hit your weak spot.

anything from this YouTube - Rush- Resist

to this YouTube - RUSH La Villa Strangiato

and the problem with the radio is they stick to music with lyrics because thats what musically inept/tone deaf people cling to. but a great mass of rushes best music contains no vocals at all. songs like YYZ, la villa strangiato, and parts of the 2112 overture.

I can totally see that too. Talent or not, I don't think they are aging very well. Their '70s stuff goes a little too far into Narnia, their '80s stuff sounds really '80s, and I never liked anything from Roll The Bones on. I don't think they'll be reaching much into a newer generations of fans. Unless you grew up with them in your life (or were raised by someone who was), they're pretty hard to get into.

"The Weapon" is prolly my fave track of theirs, BTW. Great lyrics, and Joe Flaherty introduced the track live in one of his SCTV characters. Plus, full props to Geddy Lee for helping out with the Bob & Doug McKenzie album. "Take Off" is a pure Canadian classic (and a top 40 single), used to great effect by The Simpsons when they went to Toronto.

Jeff, I got off work at 9:30pm... the concert was already 2 hours in by that time.

Basically the worst birthday present ever is knowing Rush was playing tonight and I couldn't go see them.

that show pretty much tore my fuckin head clean off.
hands down best show ive ever been to. and the visuals were far beyond amazing.
subdivisions + spirit of radio + the trees + natural science were all supremely well done.
niel pearts drum solo had this sick jungle vibe goin on for like 3 minutes. i felt like i was trudging through congos rainforest. or maybe i was baked as hell, the place was more hotboxed than a snoopdogg concert.
lol @ geddy lee right before playing passage to bankok "wow vancouver, it sure smells good in here"

9.2/10 (and thats only cause of a slight sound problem for about 10 minutes. not noticable by joe shmoe tho)
