But u never answered my question. What kind of specs do u plan 2 buy for PT? Is PT on a PC the same as on a Mac? I start audio engineering school in October and I will be using PT. I'm wondering if I need 2 upgrade my PC?
P4 1.7Ghz 256ram <-- this will have 2 go up. I'm gonna buy a seperate harddrive just for PT. |

man, if you plan on running protools, go with a mac.
i'm sorry to say, and i hate to admit it, but macs are the way to go. even if u have a KILLER pc, it will still run pretty slow... you'd have to spend well over 1000 bucks on a pc to get it to run even close to how a mac would. and tim, PT on a pc is a lot different than mac. and you'll have to upgrade ur computer to like dual P4's and like a gig of ram at LEAST. what school u goin to? im taking my 3rd semester at CDIS in october |

Sure you need a kicken system for it. Either way. Try running a DSP intensive session on a G3 :) Macs aren't all that faster than PCs anymore (well maybe with the exception of the G5.. once it comes of age) They are more stable in general, but a well tuned PC will still definetly hold its own. Audio people like macs because they run fine right off the bat. You don't nessassarily need to know a ton about computers to make a mac be reliable. you do however need a large pocketbook. You don't NEED a mac for audio, particularily just for learning. The only time I'd buy a mac for audio purposes would be if I was putting together a higher end studio. don't let expensive audio training blind you to the practicality of things :) (4Mula, your system sounds like it'll be fine for protools on an educational... yeah give it some more RAM and get a good quality hd, keep it nicely tuned, and it should be fine.) |

from someone who builds a lot of systems.
http://www.atic.ca on broadway is the cheapest in town, hands down. they are also completely inept, slow, and don't care about your business. they don't 'do' customer service. get in there at the wrong time and you will be in line for > 1h. they have bad stock tracking so they often dont have what you want. defective part? be ready for a hassle. but they still are the cheapest. i've come to find that the money i save isn't worth the hassle of dealing with them. http://www.ncix.com is on broadway/burrard + next to metrotown. they are cheap as well, usually 5-12% higher than atic (sometimes cheaper). thier website absolutely rocks, and thier online ordering is awesome. for 25-50 bucks they will build and test any system you buy from them. they've never dicked me around, and have actually called me if they see i could chose a similar part in a system for a better deal. they have a huge selection and you can see the status of thier stock for each part on the website. each entry for a part also has a Q/A section where people post questions and get answers, or post reviews... VERY HELPFUL. they remedy problems through the phone, email, and thier website. if all the parts are there, i've had systems ready and tested in under 24 hours. highly recomended. they will also attempt to do pricematching on most items. http://www.ntcw.com is where i go when i need something quick, since it's walking distance from my place and they are friendly. a good atic alternative if you're in the area (pacific st downtown). |
