Why're you making him sell off his possessions to pay rent?
Moreover, isn't your brother in gr 12? Why is he paying rent if he's still in highschool? Man, I'd just lend my brother the rent for the time being, and help him get a decent job so he could pay me back, and continue to pay rent. |

She is actually doing a smart thing. If he was aware that he has to pay rent, and decided to buy a paint gun for $250 instead, theres obviously something wrong. i'd do the same thing. but umm.. if form & Mike don't buy it, i'll be glad to take it off your hands :) (or his..) |

Legally, a parent cannot request that their child pay rent until they are 18 years old. Personally, I think that it's rather ludicrous for a parent to expect their child to pay rent unless they're severely struggling financially. My mom is a single mother, doesn't make too much money (like barely enough to scrape by), and yet she has never, ever requested that my brother and I pay rent. When I suggested that since I was working f/t and not going to school, I should pay her something, she refused. She said that it was because she's not struggling to pay the bills, so why should she make ME struggle? So, instead of rent, I bring home groceries, help her around the house, etc.. Anyhow, my point is that there are other ways to teach a young adult about priorities and responsibility than making them pay rent. |

My point was simply that it is illegal for parents to require their children under 18 years of age to pay rent. |

I started dj'ing full-time in clubs when I was 16. I finished my highschool through correspondance. I was doing my own laundry, cooking my own meals, paying bills, paying rent and basically looking after myself at 16. My parents weren't mean about it my dad definetly doesn't need the money but he was trying to teach me a life lesson on how to manage money wisely. I earned decent money and loved my lifestyle back then but my parents theory was that if I was going to make financial mistakes and get myself in credit problems it would be better to learn that lesson early on so that I could recover quicker and get back on track with my life. Everything I have I've earned myself!
Your brother needs to learn the lesson that responsabilities come first before fun and toys. I commend you for doing this and helping him learn a valuable lesson that he will one day thank you for. Good job! |
