if you're a hippy and you truly care about the envinroment, save up and go hybrid.
if you're just cheap and wanna fake the hippy, then rock a diesel, vw's are pretty good for that. but they do pollute.
as far as cost goes, hybrid's will not save you money. it takes years to even break even for the additional costs of the hybrid. granted you'll save more as the prices rise. but once again, you get mad hippy bragging rights.
for a straight up decent commuter car, i'd go with something along the lines of yaris/echo/matrix, whatever strikes a chord with you visually, and test drive the hell out of them. some folks feel certain interiors are cheap looking etc, so a test drive is a must. seeing as you'll be spending hours at a time down to seattle, comfort i assume is a priority.
check the specs on those cars, maybe mazda 3, the new vw golf. ya know all that sorta stuff. are you cruising with 3 people in the car? or usually just yourself? because that should be a consideration.
personally i wouldn't buy new, you're just losing too much money off the bat imo.
