How Much money can you make off a website?

like how many visitors would it take clicking on google ads and ish for you to make a significant amount of money? is the only time you make money when someone clicks on a ad?

also i dont mean like a site where you can buy stuff but like a information site like gamespot.com or a forum like this one..

i think you get paid for how many people visit your site and then you get a little more if people click on the ad link you have. It was explained to me like that, it could be wrong
