North Korea tests nuclear capabilities.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korean government officials said North Korea performed its first nuclear weapons test Monday, the South's Yonhap news agency reported

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the country has performed a successful nuclear test.

According to KCNA, there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the Yonhap report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

does anybody actually realize that we import pretty much jack shit from NORTH Korea? We get tonnes of stuff from SOUTH Korea, but those guys aren't fucking around with nuclear weapons and threatening to turn major cities in the US into towering infernos

The funny thing is that North Korea has managed to piss off one of their biggest supporters, CHINA.

The Chinese government was heavily opposed to North Korea moving forward with the nuclear testing.

It could be interesting how this relationship between North Korea and China pans out now.

Well can you blame them with the US-Japan alliance, Israel as an undeclared nuclear power and American hegemony?

Sure Kim Jong IL is a fanatic but it's simple power politics. There's no sense of universality in international relations. N. Korea is just trying to assert there power on the global stage by showing they can contend and that they too have the means for cohersion.
