My friend went to the oil rigs in Alberta and he said it was hard-ass work and extremely cold. He said he could barely work cause of the cold.
Sure, $6000/mo. is great money, but you are risking your life, you can get killed out there. I considered it, my other buddies friend's dad, is a engeneer up in northern BC at the rigs here, so me and my buddy could pretty much get a job whenever we want. It wouldn't be a starting salary either, he said we can make close to $8000/mo. and we'd get $1000 suits so we wouldn't get cold, some special cold suits. Its a 6 month contract, I always consider it from time to time, but I don't wanna leave my family/gf and friend's behind. Its a taugh job, not everyone is cut out for it. You will miss your family/friend's and it is like being in prison. I heard alot of people do blow up there cause its so easy to hid. All you got for fun up there is one bar, a shit load of hookers/alcohol/drugs. |

a good exercise rider here makes a sweet living.
you get $10/horse, and you can do up to 18 maybe MAYBE more. the track is only open from 630 to 1130. not a bad deal, plus if you pony during the races like i will be all winter, you get $18/race, and sometimes there's 10 races a day, 2 or 3 days a week. that being said you don't usualy work every race. |

The big thing for me is the fact that I'm off working for two weeks and I'm not completely blowing my money like I would down here. I realize that the work is hard as hell but the pay off is worth it in the long run.
Do this for a year or two and pay off all the debts (except the mortgage I suppose) and come back with extra cash for school.... it makes sense. |

One of my cousins is doing it right now.
You'll make really awesome money.. But the work is hard, and the towns you gotta live in suck (really bad drug/drinking scenes). If your tough and arent one to fall into bad habits, it could be a really good way to get some serious dough happening. |

I was talking to my boss today about this subject and he told me that 2 of his buddies back in 1991 went to the rigs in Alberta. He said they both went for 6 months (two times) and came back with a shit load of money, close to $50, 000 each. They also spent alot of money in Alberta on fun (alcohol/hookers).
He said they thought they were so rich, so they kept blowing their money, both ended up spending it all and getting nothing (no car, no house, nothing). One guy got addicted to blow and ended up a skid. The other guy works some labour job and lives pay cheque to pay cheque. I asked my boss why they didn't go back and he said cause both of they were complaining about how hard it was and both kept saying they'd never go back to that hell. ....................................... I guess over $50, 000 in one year is alot of money :) So as long as you can taugh it out, out there you should be fine. I mean coming back with that kind of money can defenitly get someone out of debt and even pay for their education, or get them a nice ride and a nice down payment on a place. I might do it, I'm giving it some serious thought. |

Well those two guys aren't the smartest the..... if you play your cards right it can be a lucrative career. There's so much focus on oil and gas right now too. The business is booming, standards are changing, and it's showing no signs of slowing down.
I'm not worried about being able to keep my nose clean (yes, pun INTENDED) Either way, still no guarantees at this point. I have to take my H2S and retake my first aid as it expired and then put in an application. They won't even look at you until you have both. |

NAIT is offering a Rig worker apprenticeship program , and shell is building a big training facility to house it. Get in and make your money quick, in a few years you are going to need a ticket.
I start at NAIT on monday , and in two months as a second year I will make pretty much what a guy on the rig makes , and I get to sleep in my own bed. Trade is the way to go in my opinion. Maybe look into that? |

I've worked out in the patch before... can't say I enjoyed it, but I can tell you one thing.. I've never eaten so many mushrooms in my life.
btw.. there's no point in going for an apprenticeship. They hire unexperienced people by the dozens. I come from a boom town, right.. just get your H2S, WHMS, and First Aid level 2 is useful. Many companies even pay for or reimburse you for them. Last edited by tiedye; Oct 20, 06 at 03:06 PM. |

Those suits are nothing more than Halley Hansen insulated coveralls.. they're not special cold suits, they're just thick. It's not like being in prison.. you get laid more often and find drugs easier in prison. |

I'll never forget about the guys who use to work in the mines while I was out in the out back of Australia. Again they made mad money, but worked to the bone in insane conditions and the long hours and long time away from home wasnt best for the family man. Not to mention the danger and risk and coming home covered in dirt and grease.
On the other hand I totaly see how this would be good for you in your situation. Maybe a few hard months of work may help pay off the morgage. However you may also want to consider getting any kind of job in Edmonton or up north. I remember seeing on the news how desprite they are for qualified workers. I heard that one boston pizza would offer a free trip to mexico if you lasted 6 months. |

Ya I'm living in GP right now (not working oin the rigs but in management training at the Keg) and the money you can make out here is insane....I'm making $18 an hour wage plus tip out once a week which is about an extra $100 or more atleast that is cash in my pocket and you an get a job at Mcdonald's for $12 an hour....it's insane
