Neuroscience has shown us some crazy things about the brains of young people in the past decade - It used to be believed that our brains were fully formed as teens and that really teens were just small adults and should be treated that way
New research shows that info. is not true and that our frontal lobes are not fully developed until we are 25 - the frontal lobe is the area of the brain that helps to control impluses and regulate 'rational' and consequential types of thought - What does this mean? It means that a young person isn't 'stupid' when they make an irrational choice - This is why so many teens are involved in what seems like stupid choices that as adults seem so obviously foolish and when asked about it, teens cannot always explain why they did what they did, or they understood what they were doing was dangerous, but didn't truly think they could be in harms way. |
