Just talk to the guy throwing the party and see what type of music he wants to be played. Hard trance and dance probably doesen't make for the best house party atmosphere. Slower tempo stuff like house or electro maybe.
As for fucktards on your gear just be assertive and make sure they know that things are not meant to be touched and keep all your stuff together and where your records are so you are constantly near them. Ask the owner if he is going to have some big friends around to look after things because for the 20 age group and especially with high schoolers you get alot of uninvited people and guys with egos who want to hear their own music. |

bring a crate of jungle records, nothing bad will happen. just kidding. invest in a tazer. they are quick, painful, and easily concealed. if someone fucks with your equipment, threatens you to play different music, or anything that would not be considered "good party behavior", make an example out of them. no one else will even dream of fucking with you. |

the best thing you can do is make some kind of DJ booth or stage so that people 1) can't get to you/ touch you and 2) they will know it's off limits by its position in the party.
personally i would suggest planning on playing at least an hour of mainstream bullshit that the average, idiot partygoer is gonna eat up.....you've got 50 cent, pussycat dolls, Fergie, justin timberlake and many others to choose from.......then as the party progresses, people get more drunk......you sneak in with something mainstream like "faster kill pussycat" or "call on me" and progress yourself into more fucked up electronica..........cuz from my experience....most ppl dont even wanna hear good mainstream electronica songs....let alone trance and harddance or whatever....you've gotta sneak it in......and be prepared to fall back to your mainstream/top 40 shit if your electronica clears the dance floor......you're pretty much there to play what people wanna hear, not what you wanna play |

since you're a newbie dj i'll give you the best piece of advice i was given as a newbie:
you're there to provide music for everyone - not just yourself. One of the hardest lessons I had to learn. I'd rent/borrow some CDJs or soemthing ot provide a little more variety. You could luck out and the peopel there could adore trance/hard dance/whateverthehellyoukidscallravenoisethese days but chances are there are goign to be bitches requesting shit all night long. With that said, you do not need to cater to the whim of evey asshole that feels the need to get in your face. If you have a killer dance floor rockin with your favorite tunes and someone tells you to play "something they can dance to" you can be justified to tell them to fuck off. Mind you, it's easier to just say "yea, i'll play it soon" and count on the fact that they're too drunk to remember requesting it. |

humm, I wouldnt play it. As much fun as it would be to play, by how your describing it your gunna be getting asked to play everything you dont have. Plus youll have to worry about your stuff all night = not to much fun.
Id say dont do it. |
