I ain't too sad, it's Santa day so it's hard to feel glum, at least for me. I heard a while back that James beat his wife pretty harshly and it whipped him up into a frenzy. This is apparently what inspired his lyrical tirades and disputably made him the godfather of funk.

All I can say for sure is it's hard to listen to him get into the groove and not be able to correlate some of what he says to what could've been said to an abused wife.

But who really cares?

I hate Lynard Skynard because they fly the Confederate flag. The whole Southern Man agenda and all. But for some reason, I can't bring myself to dislike james brown, and i have no quams standing beside my contradiction.

one of my favorite artists of all time, i manage to listen to him every day. Live at the apollo is my most prized record.

i never got a chance to see the man live.

As for Primus, I'm sorry but there is no best Primus album. They are all the best Primus album. I can't think of a single thing they've ever put out that I haven't enjoyed beginning to end.

And besides, The Les Claypool Frog Brigade is way better anyways. Christ, there were people shouting out David Makalaster at the last Primus show in town....

Oysterhead is much better than the Frog Brigade. That's the greatest power trio / supergroup since Cream.

I don't know if I'd necessarily agree with him making it as I'm not his hugest fan, who would you choose though?

Spike Jones would be a better choice.. but I'd kill to see Jim Jarmusch make a film about James Brown.

also on the positive side, he was a champion for black civil rights:
-with his song "im black and im brown" he disposed of the term "colored" in reference to blacks.
-immediately after martin luther king was killed, james brown sang all night on local radio in an effort to stop the riots that were happening.
-giving poor local children tickets for $1.00 for his concerts.


obviously james brown was a little fucked up, but he did come from a rough up bringing, being given to his aunt and uncle at a very young age, and living in a terrible area.
its no excuse for what he did later on in his life, but imagine being the biggest rock star in the world with unlimited recources. that might make you a little weird too.
