Stanley Park Tree Fund!
Check it out!
http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/park...y/donation.htm As someone who has spent a ton of time in the park playing tennis, running and biking along the seawall or just walking around, I was absolutely shocked to see the condition of it post-storm, especially on the west side of the park me and a friend at work are trying to pool together funds from coworkers, I think anyone who has spent time in the park should think about even donating a few dollars to the cause. anyways, i thought i would let everyone know, $2000 buys a tree! |

haha no doubt, it's so expensive to park there- but it's that way pretty much everywhere in the city.
I think they are estimating that 3000 trees have been damaged in the park, and at 2000 per tree, that's a lot of money to come up with that definitely was not budgeted for! |

sorry. but 2000$ for a tree?
At a time when homeless people are freezing and starving in the streets, were thinking of ways to re-beautify the parks for the pleasure of rich west end yuppies? Even if I had the luxury of extra money to donate to causes like this, it sure as hell wouldnt be to this one. |

The typhoon that occured in 1962 ruined several of the trees but the sections that look the best today are the ones where the fallen trees were left in place. |

I really don't think you understand that this isn't just 'rich west end yuppies' this is about restoring a green space that is enjoyed by many people- rich and poor year round. Keep in mind that this storm destroyed many homes for animals that live in the park, not to mention that there are about 20 homeless people that call the park home year round who might have to go elsewhere. A lot of the people who have donated at my work, including myself have also done a lot to help the homeless and hungry this season and are just getting together spare change to pool funds. I'm not asking you to judge me or anyone who wants to donate to this cause, I'm just trying to get the word out :) |

$1.00 for the seedling $1.99 for the Certificate $49.99 for the 'Give Props to <your name> Signage' next to the tree. $200.00 for the cost of prime soil, prime bark mulch, prime pampering etc $1,747.00 for the Vancouver Parks Board Pockets. I can't justify the cost of $2,000 per tree, give me a breakdown of why a tree costs that much then maybe I will. If the tree that's being replaced is located in prime open areas that have been uprooted then maybe, but if its going to be deep in the forest that nobody will ever get to see, then screw it, dump some tree seedlings and let nature take its course. The park board has alot of money, they just don't know how to spend it. Last edited by narc; Dec 28, 06 at 10:32 AM. |

tom, i'm guessing the extra money goes to the upkeep & maintenance of growing the tree over the next couple of years. plus, i doubt they're planting seedlings. i'm sure they'll be going with trees a couple years old with a full root ball.
the parks board will definitely be getting some money out of the fallen timber in there, though. i heard they'd already sold the rights to most of the fallen trees but some were being left to naturally decompose. might be wrong on that, can't find a source. |

^ they are not deciding what to do until jan 7, at least that is when the plan is rolling out, i think they may sell some and may donate some to be made into totem poles, woodwork, etc. too and then keep a lot where they can safely stay to decompose.
