Honestly, people should just stop being scared and totally irrational without having a clear understanding of the facts. The fact of the matter is, there is no accurate system for predicting earthquakes and that the reality of living in a subduction zone is that each and every single day of your lives you are at risk for being caught in a strong earthquake. You can either read the fear provoking headlines and not study the facts and just freak out about it, but it's not going to make you any safer if one does happen.
If people actually bothered to read more into it, it is that certain activity that occurs once every few years is happening that causes tremors that can go on for hours, which slightly increases the risk, but it still is a very low risk. Because major seismic activity occurs quickly, again, there is no accurate warning system for earthquakes. I remember being in grade 2 or 3 and some psychic dude was predicting that it would happen on a certain day in Vancouver and everyone freaked out because he apparently predicted the major one to hit Southern Cali in the 80's/90's. Nothing happened.
If you really are scared then the best thing obviously is to be prepared because it is a reality we all have to deal with living in a place that is at risk for large scale earthquakes. This just isn't in the next two weeks, this is pretty much every day in your life.
