Ozzfest 2007--FREE???
Annual touring heavy metal festival says tickets to its 25 summer shows will be free through sponsor Web sites.
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne threw down the gauntlet on the summer-concert circuit today by announcing that their annual Ozzfest concert tour will be free. The first family of heavy metal said today that their 12th annual hard rock festival--a 25-date tour kicking off July 7 in Los Angeles--is pulling the plug on ticket prices and giving away all tickets for free, changing the festival's name for the year to "FreeFest." "For the last few years, ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours," Sharon Osbourne said in a statement. "We certainly want everybody to make money, however we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience. If we continued with the traditional touring festival model, we would have no choice but to raise ticket prices again this year." Details are still being sorted out, but fans will be able to procure free tickets from the Web sites of the festival's major sponsors, which will be linked from the Ozzfest site and from the site of concert promoter Live Nation. Osbourne said that the best way to keep ticket prices down has been to partner with bigger and bigger sponsors. "This will change everybody's impression of the way touring in the summer in America should be," she said. This year's Ozzfest will be headlined by Ozzy Osbourne himself, a year after the metal legend surprised many fans by performing a handful of shows from the festival's second stage. Osbourne is expected to unveil a handful of songs from his forthcoming solo album, his first disc of new material since 2001. The rest of the lineup will be announced in the coming weeks, but Sharon Osbourne said she hopes more artists will want to play a free Ozzfest. "We have bands committed, but we're hoping that after today's announcement we'll have a whole influx of artists who want to be a part of something this ground breaking," she said. "We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing, but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two. If they're in town and want the rush of performing in front of 20,000 frenzied kids, they're more than welcome to join us. They can sell their T-shirts, CDs, and whatever else they've got." D ates and venues have yet to be announced. Ozzfest is expected to hit the following cities: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, and Nashville. I think I'm gonna be making a trip down to Seattle. Last edited by Pennywise; Feb 07, 07 at 06:50 PM. |
