anyone hooked an iPod to car radio?
I wanna get a new car radio CD deck and have it able to work with mp3 CDs and an iPod, but without spending much (older car), $100 to $150. Anyone made a recent purchase or have ideas about how to do this (the iPod connection)?
You can get car radios with a special Ipod bus connector so you can control the iPod from the radio deck and maybe the steering wheel if your car has those controls (mine doesn't). Those systems cost a bit extra, say $150+ and the iPod connector system can be additional cost of maybe $50. There are also a few car decks with a 1/8" pin jack input on the front for a simple audio connection to the iPod. This would probably be OK for me, a little cable from the iPod to the deck front panel. Got my eye on this Pioneer DEH-P3700MP unit that is $100 at Future Shop, it has the iPod bus connector as a $50 option but does not have the 1/8" front-panel pin jack input. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0079532&catid= http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...245002,00.html Last edited by beedub; Feb 09, 07 at 11:46 AM. |

That reminds me, my friend has one of those transmitters on an iPod Mini, gonna get a demo.
I checked the Pioneer website and I think most of their newer CD decks priced $100-$200 have the front panel input jack, the 3700 might be getting discontinued for that reason. |

they dont work well soemtimes because of the interefernce form other radio signals.
i have my ipod hardwired to my deck, but my stock deck has an auxilirary input on the front so its simply a matter of getting the right cord. |

Cheapest alternative is an FM Transmitter. I highly recommend the Monster "iCarplay Plus", I have been using it for about a year now and it works really well. It connects to cig. lighter so it's always charged and has more power for clearer signal. Hooksup to any iPod model and runs off your car's volume knob just like any other radio channel.
DO NOT buy the "iTrip" fm transmitter, it SUCKS! It's made by Griffin, looks really nice and has no cords, but it's weaksauce b/c it doens't get direct juice from your cig. lighter. ***If you have an upgraded sound system, then I highly suggest getting a REAL head unit and opt for the hardwire iPod connection as that will be the clearest and best quality (aside from CD). |
