Ceili's
Formerly Skybar.
Well, I'm proud to say I NEVER set foot inside Skybar, so, other than what you can see from outside, I'd never any idea what the layout was like. Walked in to meet Grapes to check out the new digs, watch the game, have a couple of pints and check out their menu (figgerin' pubgrub). THIS IS _NOT_ A PUB!!!!!!!!!! Despite all the usual decorative trappings of a pub, and the fact that they were playing celtic tunes (yes, I _did_ hear "The Irish Rovers"), any place that reserves tables and has a hostess seat you, is a "dining establishment", NOT A PUB!!!!! The hostesses and waitresses are HOT!!! Long hair, long legs, short skirts and great racks! One look at the menu tells you that the owners are wasting NO time in making their money back that they invested in the reno's. Serious. Make no mistake: (in the words of Grapes) "These are Vancouver prices!" Will I go back there? pffff... What for? It's now the 4th Irish pub on Granville in a 2.5 block length (Lennox, Doolin's, and another small place across the st. from Doolin's a couple doors down from ChopShop). Ya know.... Out of the lot, and after all the time I've been here, downtown, I really don't have a "local". But, I'd probably head over to Doolin's over the rest. Ratings: (out of 10) Decor: 8 (no idea what the place looked like before, but, walking past, watching them do the reno's over time and seeing what it's like, they tried to make it look quaint and comfy. In a starched, REALLLLLY-tried-hard kinda way) Music: 7 (only because I really _do_ like Celtic and East Coast toonz. Seems they're trying to do the live band thing, too, some nights. Always too loud. Just ask anyone at Doolin's, if they can hear you) Service: 9 (they were disturbingly efficient and formal. Something more akin of a higher-end place) Food: 6 (Blackened chicken burger: not bad. Veggie soup: pass. Grapes enjoyed his steak sandwich, but, rightly argued that "who serves mashed potatoes without gravy?!") Atmosphere: 5 (it just seemed too stiff and formal) Overall: 4 (just too contrived. Complete w/ bouncers wandering through the place looking over the customers, it just felt like what must have been Skybar, but, remodeled. And I was truly surprised that they had the ol' Skybar rope-lines set up for the masses that were NOT stampeding the place!) Frosty (honest opinion) Last edited by gnosis; Feb 10, 07 at 10:57 PM. |
