drugs by the numbers

cost to;

- incarcerate a criminal per year $100,000
- employ a police officer $100,000

- average cost of getting high for the user $5-$20
- average cost to the dealer $1-$10
- average cost to produce $0.10 -$1

- crimes per day by average addict 5-15
- cost of crime to victim $10-$500
- total cost per day $50-$7500

- earnings per day for minimum wage job $64
- loss to economy per year for incarcerated person $16,640 (wages), $100,000 (cop + judicial), $100,000 (incarceration) = $216,640

Point of this all????? having a massive fucking drug problem like our society does is the reason our health care cost are out of control (over doses, gang violence...). so make sure you SHAME the next person who "speaks out bravely" to say that dealing with drug adducts in a pragmatic, compassionate way is way waste of time.

I'm not challenging your assertions, but, I do question this figure.

it costs that much to employ them. doesnt mean thats what they actually get paid.

ie. police cars, uniforms, guns, training, benefits, police buildings, support/clerical staff, etc etc

^I understand your point. I gave it some consideration, before responding.

However, I still question the figure.

the numbers came from the mayor. I was listening to an interview with him a few days ago. I just made up the part about the drugs... based on a lucky guess.

If drugs are so cheap to produce shouldn't the gov't just provide a free for all and let Darwinism take care of the rest?

I'm sure a casket or a jar for ashes is cheaper for the gov't to budget for.

wages do not equal the total cost. the total cost would look something like this;

- wages
- squad cars
- uniforms
- guns
- office space
- administrative support staff
- training costs

regardless I trust the $100,000 figure to be accurate within reason as the mayor was using it.
