alcohol and drug addiction + mentally ill people who don't have access to adequate treatement due to lack of goverment funding = our homeless population in a nutshell.
[and lazy 20 something year old french canadians who are just too lazy to do anything anything with their lives and decide to migrate to bc for the winter] my opinion? it's really shitty that we can spend millions of dollars to treat heart disease and but we refuse to funnel any money towards mental health research and treatment. |

I once saw my best friend from grade 1 on bctv or utv (whatever it was called back then) saying something along the lines of 'I choose to live on the street, I like it here'
my mom and I were just starring at eachother in SHOCK couldn't believe we knew this girl. |

I actually don't mind working to pay for rent and a place to go home to every night.
I wish I could help people but I just don't have the funds to start giving away my rent money. I do feel horrible when I drive by people who ask for change at lights and it's obvious that they are mentally ill. Like the guy around Expo Blvd and Abbott. |

Im starting to understand the ppl who fight for lower income housing more and more. With all the demolishes of low income housing being replaced with $300,000 one bed room apartments... im sure the numbers will continue to rise. Ppl just arn't being realistic. |

if they are alcoholics or druggies I couldn't care less, they made a series of bad choices and now they get to deal with the results
if they are mentally ill i feel bad for them and would like to see so sort of help given - but I'm not in a position to do that if they are drifters basically fuck'em, go drift somewhere else |

oh ya? where do you live? in the west end, i recognize most of the people who ask for money as they are the same people everyday. i know the names and histories of the ones who are truly fucked up, and the rest are usually street kids who clean windshields at burrard and davie.

For some of these people the disease is just in them and after doing it once, they are hooked. No one DESERVES to be on the street |

Unfortunately, the problem is is that the problem is so massive that fixing the damage that is done is not where I think the efforts should be focused on. I think education for the future is where it should be focused. Preventing this from getting worse and essentially while trying to keep people from turning to the streets in the first place. Like the cop said in "Through the Blue Lens," education is the only way to help prevent it from getting worse.
I don't feel bad when I tell someone no when they ask for my spare change. I work for my money and I work to have what I have today. I have overcome many struggles and therefore I think others should be able to as well. This city provides so many options, resume help, job searching help, finding places to live help. The social welfare in this city is intense. And yet they want to go even more towards. Instead of giving out money for welfare...(which most DEFINITELY doesn't solve the problem, only feeds on dependency on the government) that money needs to be funnelled into other means. I don't have all the answers, but they can start by making it so that essentially one doesn't need to live off of it for the rest of their lives because it's handed to them every month. Giving prescription drugs to replace hard drugs isn't going to solve the problem either. If nothing is done though, it's only going to get worse... ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. I don't appreciate though feeling bad that I am successful and others are not. Human nature is survival of the fittest, and although society can come in and try to counter that... it essentially still rings true Last edited by thechix0r; Mar 08, 07 at 12:09 AM. |
