MMA: Fertitta Bros. to buy Pride FC
Still not officially a done deal but all sources say that they're just days away from an official announcement.
source: http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles.asp?n_id=7032 http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=7048 http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...3631&zoneid=13 In case you aren't familiar with the inner-workings of the MMA scene, the Fertitta brothers are the owners of Zuffa Inc. which in-turn owns the UFC. Note that this is the Fertitta Bros buying a controlling share of Dream Stage Entertainment (company that owns Pride Fighting Championship) and not Zuffa or UFC. The rumour is pointing to Pride continuing to be run as it's own entity in Japan independent of UFC and Zuffa with the exception of occasional talent exchanges and perhaps a once-a-year super-card with cross-promotional fights. Reports are already coming in that top-ranked light-heavyweight Mauricio "Shogun" Hua has signed a 4-fight, 7 figure contract of which reportedly, 2 are in the Pride ring and 2 are in the UFC cage. Basically, this means that we can finally see the big matchups we've been clamouring for like Silva vs Liddel, Fedor vs Sylvia (Fedor by murder), Penn vs Gomi 2, etc. The downside however is the speculation that they will attempt to unify the rules so that everything that makes Pride arguably more exciting than UFC (knees on the ground, soccer kicks, stomps, yellow card system for stalling) will be outlawed even in Japan - lets hope that the NSAC gets that stick out of their ass and allows for more dynamic fights. The other worry is that UFC could pillage the upper talent of the Pride FC roster (most consider the overall talent of Pride fighters to be superior to UFC) leaving Pride to flounder as the "B" show while UFC claims the top-spot in the world MMA scene. Hopefully this buyout will be good for the fans and fighters... |

Watching Pride 33 was pretty painful, even though it was downloaded.
Neither elbows, nor knees and kicks to the head? Still a good PPV, with Silva's KO and diaz doing that beautiful Go-Go Plata on Gomi, but I missed one or the other of those attacks. The flipside restrictions between Pride and UFC make watching them exciting for the difference. I really hope they don't pull that change....elbows are good, but some of the best clips on the planet are the stomps, and brutal knees to the head in the North-South position. Fedo vs. Sylvia? No contest. Couture showed that. And Couture's gonna lose to Cro-cop after he walks through Gonzaga. And Cro-cop got out generaled by fedor. I don't really think anyone on the planet could stand up to Fedor, and would not mind seeing a cross-promotional champ in him. He could hold those belts for a long time, and I would love to see a Fedor Crocop rematch, which could happen through this merger, and would also be very interested to see fedor vs. couture.... |

couture has the exact style needed to beat a crop cop. |

ou're right, it's pretty likely to see couture beat crocop at this point. I just feel it's a much different Crocop than we saw lose to fedor and mark hunt. He's just gotten scarier.

i think cropcop would be the overwhelming favourite to beat couture but I would also never count out couture. Probably one of the best at devising gameplans and more importantly, executing them.
Still, i don't think it's likely that couture would win - but he seems to thrive as the underdog... |

you cant stand out there and take cro cops kicks, you have to clinch fight him and ground fight him and thats what randy does best. but dont get me wrong ONE fucking kick and shes lights out. |

^ it's not just the kicks tho - crocop is pretty damn good with his hands as well as his low-kicks. Cropcop is most definitely not a 1-trick pony.
I agree that if Randy can close the distance, it'll be interesting but consider that even Fedor couldn't do much to Crocop once he had him on the ground, the only way I can see Randy pulling off a victory is takedown/lnp victory (which would likely be Randy's gameplan). Either way, should be a great fight to watch if only for the crowd heat - people *love* Randy Couture - it's pretty impressive actually... |

Japanese newspapers are now reporting it as official despite Dana "I'm not really in the loop" White's protests. I'm actually hoping this is indicative of the Fertitta's deciding to keep Dana White the hell away from Pride management.

that link just says template file not found.....I'll take your word for it for now. I'm personally a big fan of Randy. He was funny as an announcer, great as a champ, and the his fighting style is so dynamic. I would swear he musta been in the boxing ring ever since his last loss to chuck, the way he was disassembling Sylvia. And you know he'll train the right way for Crocop. I'm just not thinking Randy's strong suit of Greco-Roman takendowns will work very well. Mirko's got some great takedown defense. It'd be one hell of a laugh to watch Randy drop Crocop with that overhand right...not likely, but who would've predicted he'd drop sylvia like that? This is all "what-if" scenarios at this point though. Crocop's gotta get by Gabriel Gonzaga, and while the man's not a top tier fighter, he's capable of pulling off an upset. Crocop may seem to be an unstoppable force, but beating someone like Gonzaga isn't as easy as I can make it seem from behind my keyboard. |

Damn.
That's a really bad idea. I mean knees to head when down and soccer headkicks are way more damaging, but fighter's are conscious of this, and defend accordingly. The total lack of this variety is a weakness. It limits the sport, and mma should have as few limits as possible. t is a huge moment is the sport, though, for better or worse. |
