Two airlifted to hospital as four-vehicle crash closes Sea-to-Sky highway

Traffic was tied up for three hours on the Sea-to-Sky Highway Sunday afternoon after four vehicles were involved in an accident.

Two Vancouver residents, a 19-year-old male and 25-year- old female, were airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with critical, but non-life- threatening, injuries as a result of the accident.

Squamish RCMP Constable Daniela Czymoch said the accident happened around 2:40 p.m. about one kilometre south of Deeks Creek*. No details were initially available about how the accident occurred.

It blocked traffic in both directions for about three hours as RCMP officers worked to clear the scene.

Three others involved in the accident were taken to Squamish General Hospital with minor injuries. They were later released.

Czymoch said police are still investigating the cause of the accident and are looking for witnesses.

Meanwhile, a 46-year-old Edmonton man died after being ejected from his vehicle in an unrelated accident on the Coquihalla Highway.

Just before midnight on Saturday, Merritt RCMP officers attended a single-vehicle accident about 30 kilometres north of Merritt.

Police say excessive speed was a factor in the accident. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived.

No names have been released.

I had to wait for all that to be cleaned up before we could leave :(
it was unfortunate... heh...

but seeing all the cars line up and wait for those hours.. was like from a movie..

parked on the highway playing cards with Cerah and trying to kill time.. it was wierd.. it was like that movie with the meteor and we were just waiting to die. horrible feeling.. but ppl were so bitchy!!! they didnt care really if anyone was hurt.. they just wanted to go.. grrr...

yes, sitting up against the cement barrier on the highway for 3+ hours sucked. we called a radio station shortly before we were moving again and they said it would be 5 more hours, i was like uhhhhh HUH? we were told there was three fatalities. Don't know where the radio got their facts from, but they were way off.
