wow its surprising how many are closing down because of the dishwasher malfunctioning.... from personal experience of working at my parents restaurant, dishwashers ALWAYS fuck up. The usual reason for them screwing up is how things get stuck in the pipes EXTREMELY easily. so when the dishwasher wont drain out the dirty water, u cant use it! once we had that problem and it was fuckin hella busy with tons of people waiting for food.. oh man that was horrible..... and the dishpit was packed with dishes and pans... oh God... luckily we had a plumber come by and it took him an hour to fish out a salt shaker cap which managed to get stuck in the pipes... that was pretty damn frustrating.. luckily we were able to get clean plates out to the customers.
Things like rodent/cockroach infestation is bad news... usually not the operators fault if the restaurant is located in a ghetto area but at times these problems can be caused as a result of poor food handling and insanitary conditions, which IS the operators fault. Food Health Canada have VERY strict rules regarding sanitation and if someone get food poisoning, it means some serious trouble. Most cases of food poisoning lead to closure of the restaurant, which also means (depending on size of restaurant and number of employees) HUGE loss of money (we're talking hundreds of thousands). I'm not surprised to hear about the Milestones on Denman since i have friends who have worked there. Its a very busy restaurant so its hard to keep things clean when cooks are constantly putting together sandwiches and salads to hungry customers. It's a shame because i've heard successful stories about that operation... oh well.. shit happens and Form, you shouldnt tell people NOT to goto these restaurants because some of them are only "temporarily closed". Many of them are not closed because of poor sanitation but mainly fixtures to major appliances like the dishwashers and walk in coolers, which take alot of time and money to fix. The restaurant business is tough here in vancouver, and problems like these come by all the time without warning. It costs ALOT of money to operate a restaurant (we're talking millions of dollars here) and unnecessary bad publicity about restaurants temporarily closing down for changes is just unfair. you're messing with families here who are stuggling to keep their restaurant going. if the restaurant is re-opening, it means their problem is solvable, meaning that its not necessarily the operators fault that the restaurant had the problem (s) in the first place. If it was their fault then Food Health Canada wouldnt allow the operator to re-open, thus pretty much forcing them to go bankrupt..... its sad... but it happens all the time =( |

Good points and facts K-pryde...
I wasn't out to get the average family business but more after the larger companies like Milestones that make a ton of dough. When a salad costs $5.00 and a sandwich is $4.00 and over I think they can afford to hire an extra set of hands to get the work done. Unfortunately it's a fairly common issue for appliances to break down. In this case i wouldn't pass judgement on the place because of a technical glitch. When it comes to rats, poor food handling and sanitation issues that's when i get concerned. The only good thing (for restaurant owners) about closures is most customers never get a chance to hear about the place being closed. Unless you eat at the place everyday you wouldn't know there was a problem to begin with. I just think it's important for everyone to be aware that these types of problems occur and for people to know what types of places they're eating at. I for one would not want to eat at a restaurant that had rat shit all over the place. As for that list, the one place that scares me the most is Tan-Popo. Any place that serves sushi and other raw ocean/sea foods should be scoped closely. The guy in the white jacket chopping goodies shouldn't be a rookie. So the basic rule is: Do your homework about a place and make your own call.... Good topic |
