should elementary schoool children be allowed to....

do u think elementary school children should be allowed to wear halloween costumes to school?

some schools are now banning that...because they say that too many costumes are too scary and promote violence and disturbing behaviour...and because use of hair spray or other such products sets off bad allergic reactions for some teachers and students

now what do u think?

i think they should have limits...nothing scary...nothing that promotes violence...
can u imagine a five year old walking down the hall dressed as a tellytubby getting the shit scared out of her by a guy with a knife thru his head or something?!?!?!?

let the kids dress up damnit!

if your going to let them dressup and run around that same night in the exact same costumes, what's the difference if they do it during the day at school??

Yes, some of those things might set off bad allergic reactions to some teachers and students. Too bad for them. If they have those allergies, then they'll have to deal with it. Elementary students and their teachers aren't the only people with allergies. I think that's a really lame excuse.

I think proper empirical research should be conducted to prove whether or not it is the actual costumes itself that are promoting the violence and disturbing behavior before they decide to go banning it. people draw inferences way too easily.

as for the allergies thing, why do people seem to think it's such a bad thing that the government believes that people's health is just a tad bit more important than showing off costumes on a single holiday? if certan products create more severe reactions amongst people, I think those are what should be banned.

besides, who says you can't dress up for halloween with hypoallergenic products?

anyways, I can somewhat understand why the school system would bother bringing up such an issue. I mean banning it simply because it's easier to say "no" to everything than make a list of products and costumes that can or can't be worn in school.

can YOU guys think of a better alternative it costumes really DID cause disturbing harmful behaviour? what would you guys come up with if severe harm or even deaths occurred due to allergic reactions from hairsprays and other products?

I'm not saying I completely agree with their decision.. I'm just trying to get you guys to see another point of view.

i don't think it should be banned but instead have guidelines but like joanne said it is probably easier to say NO then make guidelines.

I think that if they don't allow toy guns at school they shouldn't allow violent customes. Just leave hallowen costumes at home that way no one can complain or feel affended beside maybe the family members.

why the hell would you hold 'costumes' responsibe for harmful and disturbing behavior. thats stupid....hmm lets punish the children on halloween because their parents are to ignorant to teach them the difference between reality and fantasy....

btw if you are allergic to something you know to avoid it....you cant honestly tell me that on just one day out of the year somebody has an allergy to these things....these are items that we come in contact with everyday and yet we dont ban them any other time....

schools, teachers, and administrators are stupid.period.end of discussion.

just because you're allergic to something doesn't mean you necessarily know you are allergic to it. and even when you do know, it doesn't mean that you can always avoid it. if a student has special hairspray that the teacher doesn't normally come into contact with but is really allergic to it, how can he/she avoid it? kick the student out of the class? send him/her home to take it off?

ignorant, unskeptical people are stupid.period.end of discussion. and according to your theory, it's probably the parents' fault :P

okay even my schools nto allowed to wear masks now..wtf?!

isn't halloween pretty much dedicated to elementary school kids? halloween is meant to have devils and witches..to make things look scary. scarier the better...just no guns and knives i guess. controversial topic.

my point about the allergies was that it's a stupid excuse to ban costumes. yes people will get allergic reactions to some things maybe. but elementary students and teachers aren't the only ones with allergies. others have them too. you can't ban everything because someone may have an allergic reaction to it. i mean if they want to do it that way, what about highschools?? they have way more teachers and way more students. are we aloud to have allergic reactions than?
and why just halloween stuff? what about perfume? those cause allergies. lots of people wear that. or flowers. i guess youc an't have those around in case someone has an allergic reaction. i guess no one would be allowed to use hair products or anything in case it gets into the air and someone may be allergic to it.

i just find that stupid. they can have the same stuff any other time of the year but halloween?

I think children should definitely be allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school. I remember when I was younger and dressing up was so much fun..in fact there hasn't been a year yet that I haven't dressed up for Halloween at school. It's supossed to be a fun holiday. I would be crushed if I was told I couldn't dress up at school.

And ya the allergies excuse is extremely hurting.

cheryl: I think there are places that actually ban their workers from wearing scented products because people in the workplace (ie. hospitals, even nursing students are told not to wear perfume at school). and I'm also referring to serious allergies that could cause someone to be really harmed. I think if enough cases occurred that people were severely harmed or died from allergies, they'd ban the product or take severe precaution to let people know to be careful when using the product. (ever notice why there's always a peanut allergy warning?)

look, I just have a feeling some crazy ass case must have happened where halloween costumes or hairsprays/other products were concerned that caused something really bad to happen. because it happened during halloween, they decide to blame it on halloween costumes in general. and in order to make sure it doesn't happen again, or the schoolboard doesn't get sued, they just decide to ban the whole thing. it's kind of like euthanasia. though it may benefit some people, there's still risks involved and in order to prevent people from taking advantage of this situation, they just decide to ban the whole thing instead. I can just somewhat understand from a legal perspective their reasons for doing this. doesn't mean I agree though. :P

or who knows... perhaps it is due to the stupidity and anal retentiveness of teachers and school board administrators.

I just always like to see the other side of the story. :P

why even bother celebrating halloween then??

the whle point of halloween is getting scared and sar-ing- others... if you don't want your children to see these things, don't let them out of the house! don't get the whole world to change just because a few people don't agree with scary costumes

its halloween, not a murder scene, schools should just lay off these topics im sick and tired of hearing about how everything promotes violence everyday. Dont cross the street wrong it may make this kid who drove by a half hour ago want to do it too, i mean really how far do they wanna go with this.

It's a time for kids to have fun and dress up, the last thing on their little minds is i wish that knife was real so i could kill people, id hope their main thought is candy yay i get to dress up.

And as for allergies, i can understand that, just make it a rule no allergy products like hairspray or perfume, most school have that already with the no peanut butter rule. but no costumes, come on...

First costumes... then Christmas cards, and candy canes, then Valentines chocolates, and love cards... then the Easter bunny...

What's next? :soak:

Stop sheltering your children. Let them have fun. For god's sake, they're just children

All this time I thought we were moving to a free society then crap like this comes up...

Hell why don't we just put all of our kids in little boxes, feed them propaganda until they are 17 or 18, then let them loose on the world to continue the cycle.

I'm sure if you have an allergy to these things you can miss ONE DAY of school!!!!!

theres a couple schools in langley who have done the same thing, they've banned costumes...
instead they're encouraging students and staff to wear black and orange...

and they will still have all of the halloween fun, halloween parties, pumpkin decoratin etc etc.

is that any better?

no no i dont think so.

It takes a way the individuality of the kids. Halloween is about using your imagination. These kids are having that freedom taken away from them.

joanne ~ ya, hospitals do that. no perfumes, no scented soaps or anything, same with shampoos and what not (my moms a nurse) and that i understand. You are dealing with people and their health all day.

But I don't get that with schools. Anybody anywhere could have a allergic reaction to something. They don't go banning products because someone may have an allergic reaction. i mean if they want to take that out of halloween. What's the difference if someone wears hairspray on halloween then if they do any other time of year?

I mean, it makes no sense to just ban these things for like 1 or 2 days a year. These products, if they are so dangerous, should be banned the rest of the year then right??

I see where they are coming from, but i just totally disagree with it. But then again, I don't agree with lots of things the schools do so whatever. :P
