Japanese Food

We're having a sushi party at my friend's house this Saturday. I can't wait! :) There's going to be lots of good Japenese food, so my dreams about the upcoming feast have inspired this thread.

What are some of your favourite kinds of Japanese food? And what kinds would you not touch with a 20-foot pole?

Mine YUM list includes:
-miso soup
-UNAGI (BBQ eel)
-raw stuff: salmon, hamachi, spicy scallop roll, uni
-tempura
-teriyaki chicken
-sushi ginger!
-LOTS of wasabi (I like so much wasabi that my eyes water and you can feel the "sting" in your nose)
-green tea ice cream

My YUCK list includes one item, and one item only...those gross motoyaki baked oysters covered in mayo. Can you say EWWW?

When I went to Toronto for Thanksgiving, my friend brought me to this restaurant that had this special roll that the sushi chef made up. It's called "crunchy maki", and I swear, it's one of the greatest inventions ever. It's a roll with shrimp tempura and some other stuff inside, but the rice on the outside of the roll is covered in a bunch of tempura batter bits. Mmmm,,,

I'm sure my YUM list could go on forever, but I'm in dire need of some sleep right now. hehe...

i am addicted to japanese food. it's running me broke, i go to my favorite place so often. the best stuff is:

tempura, all kinds.
miso soup
ikura
unagi
teriyaki chicken

:PartEkid:

i can't stand ginger though. i tell them not to even put it near my food. the smell kinda ruins it. i don't like ebi either. it's like dehydrated shrimp.

Japanese food is great!

I spent 3 months in Japan and learned to love the food very quickly even though I'm not all that much of a seafood eater.

My favourites are:
Kappa Maki
Vegetable Tempura
Definitely some Miso Soup
Udon of any kind
Yakisoba

and the list goes on and on, Japanese food is just so good.

i just came home from a westernized japanese food restaurant. it was a bit too interesting for my liking. they had japanese pizza...the crust was egg. so it pretty much tasted like a fattening seafoody omelete (sp). had a "japanese garden salad" that had sashimi in it... i kept singing "under the sea- lil mermaid" while eating it, cuz it had that coral-look-alike stuff in it.

japanese food is yummy.. i hate it after i go to an all u can eat restaurant though. i stuff myself up way too much cuz i feel pressured to finish everything i order and i always order way too much. unagi don is my faveeeee and the good ol cali rolls are yummy.

Bebu**Which westernized Jap restaurant did you go to? Fusion cuisine...it's good sometimes. It really depends. Some places are too "try hard" about it, and everything is just too complex and complicated. But some places have some pretty interesting stuff. It's all about the trends, even when it comes to food. heh...

Gold Streaks**Nuh uh. ;) I love ikura!! Salty goodness.

Kristamata**Ewww. Warm avacado...it makes it become a slimey mush. When I think of that, I think of supermarket pre-packaged sushi. *gag*

That japanese pizza is Okinomiyaki (spell?), I remember because Yukyou from Ranma 1/2 used to make it all the time.. it's actually authentic Japanese food...

Erica, how can you eat the Eggplant/Zucchini stuff? It's so slimey, jelly fish like, well it's more so like eating rubber fetuses!! IMO at least... which hmmm, doesn't make it so bad then.... hmmm...

So the dinner went really well. My friend's friend is Japanese, and he made the most kick-ass tempura! He also made these unagi wraps...like, it was unagi ontop of a little bit of rice, wrapped into a big piece of seaweed. Kinda like a cone, but not quite. They made the miso soup from the paste, and added in tofu, mushrooms, and bits of seaweed...and I swear, I have never had such good miso soup in my life!! Making the sushi was fun. hehe...the sashimi looked kinda warped after my friend cut it, but we all figured that it all goes down the same anyways. Yum to cold soba noodles! And there was definitely an ample supply of sake too. hehe...all in all, it was definitely a good time!
