OK... I may be turning overly sentimental here
since my Dad passed away this June.
But I read your people's post on gift ideas, shopping, etc and I feel that the spirit of the season is lost. Actually, I feel that the spirit of the season was lost a LONG time ago to commercialism. All I am trying to say is for you people to slow down and take a look at what you have and be thankful. You may think you have it bad but it can be a lot worse. You have a roof over your head, food to eat and a computer to play on. Take a look at the people you love and make it be known to them. Sure, you might be thinking 'I have lots of time to do these things...' but when the chance is taking away from you forever you'll regret it. In these days of uncertainty, make sure you notice and acknowledge the little things that make you what you are today. That is all. |

No, what you say is true, this season has truely gone to commercialism, but families still get together so the true spirit isnt completely lost.
I've lost my father as well a long time ago and i still to this day treasure the family i have. I still buy them the commecialized gift tho added on to the love i have for them. |

I nearly lost my dad 5 years ago to asbestosis, a scarring of the lungs that leads to breathing problems and heart failure. Workers ( like my dad many years ago) who manufacture or use asbestos products and have high exposures to asbestos are often affected with asbestosis.
Inhalation of asbestos can also cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen lining. It may be linked to cancer of the stomach, intestines, and rectum, as well. Great huh? All of that nasty news prompted my dad to quickly give up smoking. He's been off smokes for a good 5 years now. What did it do for the family? Well i'll tell you it brought us closer and made us realize how precious life is. Here's a guy who's worked hard all his life and gets stung by something he dealt with 25+ years ago. Pathetic. He's in good shape now and doesn't plan on leaving anytime soon. |

yeah. My dad was back east for years and we didn't talk much...then he finally moved back to the west coast this year and I was really really looking forward to xmas with my dad...
then after his mother died (my nana) a month ago, he went missing and nobody can seem to track him down.. it kind of sucks, because xmas really is a time for family to all get together (once they're grown up and moved out, that means a lot..) M |

I have no spirit at all. THe only reason I like christmas, is becuase for a few short days people actually are nice to each other. Thats the only reason i look forward to it. Aswell I like how a few days after christmas is new years. I love bringing in the new year!

Well that's the thing. With every one's schedules that collide, and how some people have places to go things to see, people to meet, raves to attend to, and ecstamasy to pop, families just don't always have time to set aside a moment of silence one hour of each day to hold hands and be at peace. [sarc]
If every day was a thanksgiving day or christmas, it would be just another day where people would eat turkey sammiches at work. Trust me no one would be thankful for that. After 365 consecutive days of thanks and HOHOHO's the purpose of thanksgiving/christmas would lose it's meaning. It's nice to set aside one day for the purpose of getting every one together, a day where every one (well most peeps) recognize as a day of thanks, and a day to appreciate the loved one's around you. I agree with you that we should be thankful for who we have EVERY DAY rather than to set aside one day, but sometimes we tend to forget how much some one means to us, and those select few days out of the year serves to remind us to cherish what we have.. as long as you can take the holiday season to it's full advantage, the holiday spirit won't be completely lost, at least not to you *wipes tear*. it's all about how much you put into it. Sure monkey-makers-make-money outta the seasons but that's what they do best, and they'll do it for anything. Besides, no one said you had to BUY a christmas gift. MERRY CHRISTMAS GRINCH FACES :145: |

i don't see how the spirit of the christmas season was ever "lost" to commercialism.
if anything, the season was created by commercialism. even the birth of jesus christ was probably just a coke advertisement that found its way into the bible. fuck, NIKE probably published the bible in the first place. either way. it's a holiday to celebrate the birth of "jesus christ", and i'm not a christian, so why should i attempt to recognize the significance of this sham of a holiday...? christians are the true capitalists. why do you think they don't put santa buddha on a holiday coke can...? |

wow this is a good thread.
im sad that you think the 'season is lost' i really hope you regain something somewhere my mom gets BIG into the xmas spirit, we dont care what we get, but she cares what she gives .... anyways, the other year, she lost her xmas spirt and didnt celebrate...she didnt even put up a tree! , yes she bought presents, but i constantly kept getting calls from my brother and sister complaining about how sad she was. this year, she is okay. and i am happy. |

i am against christmas because it's a bad influence on society.
it gives people the impression that they only have to be cheerful for 5 minutes out of the year. and drunk on every other calendar holiday (monday, tuesday, easter, wednesday, etc... drink drink drink) PLUR364.5daysaYEAR and i don't like how people use the holiday season as an excuse to complain about other people's complaints. a lot of people don't have it as bad as they say they do, but that's life, people will be people... let the whiners whine... mmm... wine... |
