Seriously, what is going to fuck Canada over in the end is this constant attitude that we can never do anything to make the rest of the world hate us, and that everybody just adores us. Yeah, we may not be as domineering as the united states as far as the world stage is concerned, but we're not exactly angels either. I think it's ridicilous to think that we're safely living in this bubble that ends at the 49th paralell.
and J'nette, if you want to be safe I'd say Australia is probably one of the worst places to go. Have you been paying much attention to the news at all lately? heh |

^ ya I’ve thought about him taking out oil fields. but if he wanted to do that, then the ones in and around Calgary and other parts of Alberta would be better targets for him, they are larger and would create more problems.
however the bin laden network uses targets that are recognized easily by the world and that nation because it is their intent to instill fear more then actual casualties. This is because it is more effective to paralyze people and ruin their daily routines then to try and kill off as many people as possible, although they want to do that too. and ji~net dont worry, just dont visit the cn tower when you get there. im down for australia tho :) |

I saw a very in-depth documentary that kind of puts all of this into the proper perspective:
The documentary was about the CIA, CSIS (The Canadian spy agency) and a new submarine torpedo technology developed by the Russians. All spy agencies wanted to get their hands on a couple of these new 250 km/h high-speed torpedoes. Every country with a spy service was trying to find a way. The CIA's foreign military technology expert/spy *retired* and went to Russia to be a businessman. The Russians were onto him right away, bugged his hotel room and soon found him speaking to torpedo scientists. The busted him and held him in jail for treason. The Kursk sank because of a design failure on a new model of this type of torpedo. The Russian government (Putin) blamed everything on him (claiming sabotage, as he was trying to steal them) and threw him in the nastiest of Russian jails. As he was trying to prove his innocence in court, a Canadian spy was also trying to get access to the torpedo technology. He managed to hook up a deal to buy two of them for $2 million US. The order signed by Vladmir Putin himself. The American spy didnt even know about any of this until three years after he was released. CBC's Fifth Estate showed him the documents of the sale, all dated around the same time he was in court for treason being ostracized in the Russian media and by the Russian government for trying to steal these torpedoes from Russia. He was totally outraged, but of course there was nothing he could do... He was in fact a spy. Obviously, Canada likely gave at least one of the torpedoes to the United States, granting them access to the cutting edge technology. Us Canadians have a different way of doing things that keeps us from getting in as much trouble internationally than the US - but in Bin Laden's case we are a very close ally of them. He was trained by the CIA during the Soviet-Afghanistan war and of this I am sure he he is well aware. Are we safe? Probably - but if Oshama being Laden wants to make an example of a nation Friendly to the US that is secondarily involved in the war on terror - Canada will likely be the first target because of both our strong dependence and allegance on the US, and also because of our close proximity to the US. All said... My favorite part of the story was how we (CSIS) totally one-upped the CIA (and everyone else for that matter). Go Canada! |
