Fraser Valley Inn = Abbotford's version of Downtown Eastside

Welcome to the Abbotsford Times - On Line - News

No doubt they cleaned up the place since then, but this reminds me of Downtown Eastside circa 1992.

Today, meth has made inroads into the addicts' community in Vancouver. At least when the junkies are sleeping off their last trip, they're not paranoid.

That junkies were given a place to live in in Abbotsford should be commended, but only if the city actually put more money into more beds in the rehab facility offered by the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions.

Instead, the city locked the doors until the owners of the Fraser Valley Inn cleaned up their act e.g. didn't let junkies rent there by the month unless they were clean.

This is a stupid policy, and part of the ongoing, failed War on Drugs.

While we are getting more meth and cocaine into the Fraser South region, we hear less about the junkies but that does not mean they don't exist.

In fact, Vancouver's trend is to kick out junkies and gentrify the hotels. This is stupid and unnecessary, because it's not always in the best interest of the junkie, but is only in the best interest of developers.

In short, it's a class war. A case in point is the story of Andrea Claire Fraser, 30, daughter of an Alberta judge now in rehab in the posh rehab facility on Bowen Island. This facility is so posh it makes Britney's stay look like a vacation.

If Ms Fraser manages to survive 30 days there, then maybe she'll be ready to be the high-society postergirl for crystal meth.

Meanwhile, the Fraser Valley Inn looks like it's the skidrow of Abbotsford with rumors of a brothel nearby.

If Abbotsford is serious about being a community, maybe it's time to stop hiding the problem of drug addiction and prostitution and humanely address those concerns instead of locking out people who desparately need help.

Incidentally, a former college classmate owns the Yorkshire Rose Cafe and Pub, kitty corner to the Fraser Valley Inn.

I wonder how he feels running a business in the armpit of Abbotsford.

Wow, a hard hitting report, filled at least four years behiend the times.

What? There are a lot of drugs in the suburbs?!?!?

Quite seriously though, hopefully a report like this will open the cities eyes and make them realize that trying to push the problem away dosen't work.
