And NO I would never agree to mandatory military services.

Unless something so tragic happened such as an occupying force came in and we were being lead into genocide.

yeah the spectre of mandatory service would certainly play a factor in the popularity of future wars. Which is a positive, i honestly dont think too many people would have supported the war in Iraq if they had a decent chance of losing their own lives or a loved one's in the conflict.

That being said im fundamentally opposed to mandatory service because i believe that your life is not the property of the government and therefore this type of decision should be entirely voluntary. However the government should also recognize the depth of commitment on behalf of those who do choose to serve and thus they have a responsibilty to the soldiers to provide them with the best equipment and to only put them in danger when necessary.

We are there as peacekeepers. We were brought in by bad american ideas, but we are currently engaged in the safe keeping and reconstruction of the afghan people. We have a favourable public support from those who we have been working with for a while, and are currently working on brining choice to the people in the country side.

Sure, you might say we are forcing them to be democratic, but if you new much about afghanistan you would know that it is one of the most unstable nations on the planet, its problems date back before the 1st world war. Change in governments was common and the people have been kept in the stone age.

Currently Canada is trying to help secure the democratic government for those who want it, from those forces outside of allied operation who are wishing to opress the people into hardcore fundamentalism.

In a democratic society people can choose to be fundamental. A perfect exmaple is the amish in north america.

I in no way condone americas actions in Iraq, but i do agree 100% with afghanistan. I think it was being ruled by an oppresive and illigitimate government who was in no way cooperative with the rest of the world, and was brought to power through conflict, just like the 100s of afghan governments before it.

Considering we are not being forcefully kicked out of khandahar and only recieve the odd terrorist attack from rouge extremists, i think our position no way parralels that of the invading american forces who destabalized a somehwat stable arab / muslim state and have sent the nation into a civil war which was kept under control and rapped up by sadam.

I would please ask you not to show such disrespect to our armed forces by calling them something they are not. Canada is a respectful nation and we have a good history of staying as a neutral or peacefully aimed nation throughout history. And i think that we continue with this to this day.
dude, we arent keeping peace in afghanistan, were blappin fools straight up. its just in this world of shades of grey it looks like we might be doing the right thing.

The military isnt a peace keeping force is a war making force, and thats the way it should be. Anyone who has convinced themselves otherwise is naive.

We've had peacekeeping roles in other nations before. This is definetly not one of those. Like Sean says, we're "blappin fools". Seemingly because we don't like their ideas, their strict religious mores and their mouthy attitude. Which has always been enough for some people.

For anyone whose fingers are hovering over "post reply" in anticipation of a "BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR HUMANITARIAN WORK IN AFGHANISTAN" rebuttal, well.. true, we are probably doing a lot of good there.

Meanwhile, in Sudan and plenty of other countries, we do ... what, exactly?

Humanitarian work might be a positive side effect of our presence, but it certainly wasn't why we got involved.

Honestly, I think the reason we've upped the ante in Afghanistan is that Harper is sad we didn't jump into Iraq back in '03, and he wants to make it up to Dubya.

Please do not vote for this man again, Canada.

You keep living in your little left-wing bubble. People don't understand that mandatory service is different from a draft.

A draft is where you take People, hand them a rifle and send them somewhere to kill people.

Mandatory Service is about a year where you complete your Basic Training and maybe a Specialty Course. After which you decide wether to continue your contract or not. Rarely are you kept for a deployment unless you sign up and want to be deployed to an active zone.

edit: Chad... I'm not insecure. Even after you kissed me I still like Women. No matter how amazing your love was. :P

I love how the dude who used to have a "liberal" signature accuses people of "living in a little left wing bubble". There isn't even politics like that here son, and if you want to be extreme and call anyone who opposes military action or mandatory service a 'commie bastard' you might as well move to texas because it doesn't work that way here.

Erik, mandatory service is WORSE than a draft. I'd rather just have a rifle shoved in my hands and be done with it rather than spend a year in rigorous training for a cause I do not agree with.

Unless they're fucking with my lawn, I'm not prepared for war.

wtf? A draft is worse than mandatory service because a draft's sole purpose is to inflate the ranks SPECIFICALLY for a certain engagement.

Mandatory Service is just basic training for everyone just in case of a massive threat to your own nation.

The Swiss have Mandatory Service for God's sake.
