YouTube - Beryl
its called beryl, and its been out for 2 years now. originally developed by novell. fully open source, and the development speed is incredible. thousands of people working on this daily... for those that know... if you pull the SVN sources, within about 24 hours you can expect 'visible' changes. iv been running it for about 6 months now, and it simply kicks ass the speed at which this shit is developed is incredible, id say one of the busiest open source projects out there rite now. the interface has a very organic feel to it. and alot of people question weather its actually useful, i would definatly say yes. once you learn all the shortcuts, and get a decent 5-7 button mouse, you can zoom around and have consoles open all over, code all over and seamlessly switch between tasks. iv definatly seen an increase in productivity. kinda like osx's cocoa, but better. tomek. EDIT: This vid is more appropriate to the topic... YouTube - 3D Desktop! TouchScreen and XGL on Linux! And yeah, this is all available today, with your average $1000 PC... And you get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing bill gates one get another penny of your money to boot! Last edited by riddla; May 31, 07 at 09:51 PM. |

I cant decide if I like it. Its definatly very cool looking. touch screens frustrate me because they are so flat and do not have a three dimensional feel to them. A mouse I can grab, but tapping a screen just doesnt do it for me.
If they eventually take this to the next level and develop a fully 3d interface that would be very cool. (user wearing those gloves that can detect hand movement). As long as the hand recognition technology was very very percise the operation of a 3d interface would be very powerfull. |

they already have 3D controllers which range from very simple (a jog dial that can move vertically and horizontally) to highly complex (a pistol grip with all sorts of limbs for directional detection). Its still a few years off from being put into the hands of the common consumer (honestly, how many of you would actually USE one?). You can get a reasonably cheap jog-dial variant for around $160US
