the bears are out again..and due to people not picking up their trash when camping..squamish has even had a grizzly...
if you party in paradise valley..please clean up before you leave because we don't need any more bears getting shot this year for being garbage bears.. thanks. |

The grizzly in Squamish was the same one that was at Mile 36 last year.
According to Steve Roshetta with the Min Environment, the grizzly population of the Squamish River and Elaho Valleys has increased by almost double in the last two years, due mostly to heightened conservation efforts. That's about 30 or so, up from 17. Traditionally the bears would stay in the upper valley, but their territoriality and competition for food resources forces some of the younger ones down. In the case of the bear last summer, he got to the point of being habituated to human contact where he had no fear of loud noises (like sound systems). Apparently he first made an appearance during Festivus, and Mr Roshetta requested that a message be passed on to the person who (reportedly) walked up to the bear and kicked it: "You're lucky that he was just a yearling with undeveloped instincts, and probably confused by what was happening, or you'd probably be dead". People thinking of going camping should totally know their bear proofing/safety. The Mile 36 bear tore a couple of cars open in the late summer last year, based on trace scents of food. Something to think about.... |
