Your top 3 DJs by genre...?
I'm on the hunt for talent that's unknown to me (aka DJs I don't know about yet!)...so the best way to find out is ask "Who are YOU listening to?" Please post your top 1, or 3, or 10 DJs of my fav genres:

I like the way this thread wasn't titled "WHO IS YOUR MOST FAVORITE DJ?!?!"
Questions like that... "Who's your favorite band??".. never made any sense to me. IMO if you can even fathom choosing a single "favourite band".. you're not listening to enough music. There's too much out there. I'm going to answer, but I'm going to make up my own categories: Breakbeat 1) Plump DJs 2) Stanton Warriors 3) Bassnectar Honorable mention: Z-trip (wrong category??) Pop/rock 1) The New Pornographers 2) TV on the Radio 3) Stars? Radiohead? Pixies? Honorable mention: Mates of State Ska/Reggae/etc 1) The Slackers 2) Sublime 3) The Congos That's it for now!#@$ |

Current Swell (have you guys heard this blues/reggae band?? DAAAMN! Freakin young too!) Shpongle (can we say dreamland?) Matisyahu (amen to tha jewish raggaman! lmao) Disco Dave (from Kelowna...funky/jazzy house) Sublime (there's an oldie) Third Eye Tribe Bob Marley (even older haha) Prodigy (their old shtuff) I know I'm missing a ton.... ebbo, i take your point but i disagree. the strength of the multi-genre set is a popular belief amongst old timers, but the plain fact is that way back in the early days of electronic music DJ's were playing varied sets simply because there wasn't enough music of any one kind out there to stick to one particular genre. i think that there is something really special about a DJ who knows a particular genre well and can work a theme hard. multi-genre sets are fun, but franky they're often gimmicky, rough and unacademic. party music, sure. pushing boundaries, rarely.

And the reason is this: Whatever you classify your DJ sets as, you still have the option of moving outside of a specified genre. And this is essential to making your sets enjoyable to someone who is over the age of 19. A couple of examples: - Nuskool Breaks - Speed Garage - Jump Up Drum & Bass Just to name a few of the genres that, given any set, if I hear really more than 4 or 5 tracks of each, I'm looking for the next room/stage/party. That's not to say I haven't heard some wicked single-genre sets. But I find the more you open yourself to GOOD music that can be incorporated instead of limiting yourself to a particular style, the more you can ultimately entertain with your set. When I play, I'm mostly playing Electro or Dance Rock or some other french form of House music. But that's not to say I don't occasionally slip in a techno track, some breaks tune, or some classic rave track from the early 90s. Keeping the mix up like that keeps your audience more involved. I'm not saying everybody needs to be Z-Trip or Team Trainwreck or whoever. I'm just saying if you limit yourself to a specific genre (or worse, some obscure subgenre of a genre already played out) you're automatically denying your audience a vast majority of the good music out there. |

I vote for multi-genre sets. I find single genre sets really boring. When I was younger I liked the single-genre sets a lot more. Now I usually leave early if all I hear is repetition. I've walked out early on a LOT of big name DJs because of this.
Having said that...it takes a REAL GOOD DJ to be able to bounce the genres WELL. Bassnectar is a prime example of a DJ who is REALLY GOOD at bouncing around the genres. |
