Shaw or Telus??? who is better for internet??
Im moving out soon and need to get internet hooked up. I've always used telus at home and it seems pretty good. Has anyone used both providers? which is the better deal for price and speed?

Telus isn't even a viable option anymore, their speeds just aren't in the same league as Shaws. Telus should only be considered if your internet usage is download-light and gaming-heavy. Its worth mentioning that Shaw no longer allows connections to any mail server other than their own over port 25. This means that if you have your work email setup at home you'll have to send it out through shaw's email servers, so better pray your work doesn't have an SPF record.

I'm locked in a 6 month battle over an error in the billing from Telus.
When you sign up for two years, they give you the modem. They forgot to check that box or something. three months into having the internet, I recieve a bill saying I owe them $200 for not returning my modem. I call them to inform them of this. 3 months, 6 calls, the charges still remined. Everytime them saying don't return the modem. Finally one of them says they will ship me a new modem, and to return the old one (both are the same models, so it's kinda pointless so whatever). They sent me a bill saying I owed them for two modems along with the replacement modem. However, they forgot to tell me where the hell I ship this one (Telus BC will not take back the modem locally). I know it's somewhere in Alberta, but nobody at telus can seem to figure out the adress. So yes, go with shaw. |

Depends on your usage. I would say Shaw for speed - but they do like to do packet filtering on some things, and if everyone in your area has Shaw, you might experience lower speeds than advertised [which wouldn't ever happen on Telus]
Telus has never bothered me about going over the traffic limits [usually I do about 500% every month] because I'm sure they realise I might otherwise switch. I can't say I've ever had other issues with them, but then again I fix most of my problems anyway. To note, since I am undergoing moving, I might consider switching back to Shaw. Let's just be happy we don't have Rogers as an ISP, I heard they are terrible with filtering all sorts of traffic. |

i always had terrible problems with shaw.. i went to Telus about 4 years ago.. i've never looked back.. never had an issue and telus it maybe goes down once a year for about a few hours at most.. if it goes down.. i found shaw was going down for extended periods of time up to several times a month and last i checked shaw internet costs more than telus does.. especially if you already have a home phone line which is most likely telus for the lower mainland.. telus charges me $35 per month.. when i was with shaw they were charging $50 not to mention when the internet went down you could never get through to anybody where as telus you can
but then again this was 4 years ago.. so i don't know what shaw's like now |
