pig aims for snake in a tree, but caps five-year-old in the dome instead
Cop shoots at snake, kills boy, 5 - CNN.com
NOBLE, Oklahoma (AP) -- A police officer shooting at a snake apparently killed a 5-year-old boy who was fishing at a nearby pond, officials said. Jack Tracy was fishing with his grandson when a bullet fired by a police officer struck the boy in the head. Austin Haley was fishing with his grandfather, Jack Tracy, when Tracy said he heard a shot and saw something hit the water just a few feet in front of the boat dock where he was standing. Moments later, a second shot hit Austin in the head. A Noble police officer who had responded to a report of a snake in a tree apparently fired the deadly shot while trying to kill the snake on Friday, City Manager Bob Wade said. "I was told that they tried several ways to get the snake down, but it was still hissing at them and firmly lodged," Wade said. "What I was told is that the owner of the home either suggested or agreed that they should go ahead and shoot the snake, and then everything happened from there." Tracy thought someone must be trying to kill him and his grandson, so he put the child on the back of a 4-wheeler and drove to his daughter's house about 200 yards away. "Then two officers came out of the brush over there," he told The Oklahoman. "They didn't tell us they were the ones who had been shooting or that they had shot him. They didn't admit a doggone thing." The boy was pronounced dead at an Oklahoma City hospital, about 25 miles north of Noble. Wade refused to identify the officer but said the person had been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. "This is so bizarre it has to be fully investigated," he said. "We're pretty sure circumstantially that it is the bullet from the police officer's gun, but it might be a bullet from someone else." Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown said a state investigation was under way, though it appeared the fatal shot had been fired by the officer. Tracy has little doubt. "I'm not saying the cop shot him on purpose," he said. "But let me tell you -- if I had a kid and put him in this car and didn't put him in a car seat and he got killed on the way to town, they'd charge me with murder ... and what this cop did is a lot worse than that." |

i do think so.
i think so completely. which is maybe where the cop may lose his shield, or at least get suspended. but its not my call, nor yours. i like to give police the right to make judgement calls based on their trained assesment on a given situation. if their assesment was wrong, then they should be treated as such. but that is up to their superior to make the decision. not the massive. and certainly not the massive in a completely different land with different laws. |

The cops could of done multiple things.... 1. Wait it out 2. contact the spca or some other specialist. 3. Use a non-lethal arms such as an electrical cattle prod type device... As far as trying to shoot a snake.... What were they using there handguns?. I don't care what types of marksmanship you have trying to shoot an object as thin as a snake with a handgun is extremely difficult. When a police officer fires there weapon at say for instance a "human" target, they are mainly trained to shoot the person in the chest area... why... well you can't miss because of width and height of a chest area... Any if they didn't use handguns, were they using a rifle? I've yet to hear of any rifles other then a shot gun that does NOT have a scope. So really they'd see those people. And if they were using a shotgun then thats just retarded. As far as I am concerned this is murder. |

This was totally preventable and he should lose his job at the minimum |

he probably couldve hit the snake alot easier even with only using a rifle's iron sights.

However I think you may have read it wrong. Lets take the shotgun out of the picture here, what I meant is that I have yet to see any police force use a rifle without a scope. Regardless scope or no scope, wouldn't they see the target.... or if there was a brush type area shouldn't they have looked to see what is behind it? You'd think that they'd have sufficient training. yet again its america were talking here... |

oh deffinitely. 200% better chance. its just funny that he called a shotgun a rifle, then said he doesnt know of any rifle without a scope haha..... general public makes me laugh when they talk about guns.
i still agree he shouldnt have even used a gun. but like i said before, he gets paid to make decisions. we are thousands of miles away and pretty much got the shittiest version of the story, so i still believe its not our place to make the call, its only his superiors. i believe he will lose his badge. but in the case that he doesnt, i will support his superiors decision cause obviously they know alot more about it than we do. |
