The gelatin in JELL-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. The resulting mixture is boiled, and as the collagen breaks down, the resulting product, gelatin, is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture.

Elmer's glue is also made of animals. I think the fact most mainstream sugar is made of corn is more disturbing. I mean, what else are you going to do with hoofs, but why don't you just use sugar when you need sugar? Are they going to make corn-salt too? Corn pepper? Why modify corn into frankenfood when real ingrediants still exist.

ok so i looked it up myself. corn is overproduced in the US because the production is subsidized, partially because of it's multiple uses (can be used to produce ethanol and is used in feed for livestock, for example). also there is a large tarrif on sugar coming from brazil, which is one of the largest sugar producers, to protect the corn industry in the US.

I always check the packaging on any candies before I eat them.

things with gelatin: marshmallows, skittles, jello (jello pudding is OK though), trifles,

some types of these items contain gelatin: ice cream, margarine, cream cheese, yogurt, gummy candies, jelly

in makeup look for hydrolysed collagen in the ingredients - this is a form of gelatin

there's more - just check the labels
