How to Throw an Axe
Introduction
Axe throwing has a long tradition with lumberjacks. The axe's long wooden handle gives it a complicated aerodynamics. Axe throwing does not require a lot of expensive equipment and can be done in a backyard with proper preparation. Watching the flight of an axe gives the thrower a heightened sensation of danger and delivers a feeling of accomplishment as the axe strikes the target. Instructions Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Axe Throwing Preparations Step One Choose an axe with a handle at least 24 inches long. The axe can be purchased at any hardware or home and garden store. Step Two Construct an indoor throwing board. Build a throwing board that is at least 6 feet high, 2 to 3 feet across, and 3 to 6 inches thick. Paint 3 concentric circles on the throwing board. Step Three Create an outdoor circular target from a large thick ring of hardwood at least 6 inches thick or more. It should be at least 24 inches in diameter and made of strong thick wood. Paint 3 concentric circles on the target. Step Four Place the target in a safe and secure location. The target should be placed at least 9 feet away from the throwing line. This distance gives the axe time to revolve and strike the target in an upright position. With experience, the target can be moved further away. Tips & Warnings
Step One Take a wide enough stance to provide stability. The foot that corresponds to the throwing arm should point towards the target. Step Two Fix your eyes on the target to get your aim. Step Three Hold the axe steadily at eye level and get a feel for the weight. When ready, move the axe back behind the head. Step Four Throw the axe in one fluid motion. Keep the forearm straight, bend the elbow and release when the arm and axe are pointed at the target. This takes considerable practice.
