Question about a weird Japanese fad

What is the name of this Japanese 'fad' where these chicks tan/bronze themselves to the point that they look like grilled chicken?

They also usually always wear extremely brightly psychedelic colored clothing made out of leather.

I used to know what it was called, and there was even a thread on this topic here a long time ago, but I forgot...

Thanks!

It's Ganguro.. then it went to Ganjiro (white)..

there was also yamamba & kogal trends but those are less related to skin tone.

But those were all trends of many years ago. I think it was a big thing back when I was in grade 11 or so, so about 6 years ago?
Trends turn really quickly in jp.

I correct myself: Yamanba & ganguro are both what you are looking for.

Ah yeah... Ganguro & Yamanba are the ones! Thanks for all the replies.

And I didn't know there were so many other sub-cultures too - I thought it was all called one thing... but on Wikipedia there are quite a few more:

Quote:
Japanese subcultures

Subcultures: Bōsōzoku | Cosplay | Ganguro | Lolita fashion | Gyaru and Gyaruo | Kogal | Sukeban

Cultural phenomena: Gyaru-moji | Japanese fashion | Kawaii | Visual kei

Just so you know, their isn't a style called harajuku, its actually an area where kids hang out, i got some great pics from the other month. Hararjuku is any style taken to the extreme. You see all kinds of cool fashions. Here in Osaka they are pretty diverse, running around umeda(downtown) is great people watching.

Otaku is actually a word describing people who are extreme geeks, it could be anime, computer games, cards or figures. Basically its a uber geek who is only into one thing.

Yeh in Japan they have a kaiju figure thing that all the otaku's geek over.

I've heard Japan has a great punk/metal scene as well as dancehall in some areas. And apparently they like rockabilly too!

Only put the video ID in between the BB code tags, NOT the full URL!

I've come to accept that you can think up the weirdest fad, and japan has already done it or there are at least two people who are actively participating in it.

^ ahaha

But no - it's cause I work for a fashion company and I often see the same style of makeup that the Ganguro and Yamanba girls wear. At first I couldn't remember where I saw that style before, but then remembered an old thread on FNK that was about Ganguro. I couldn't find the thread however, and so I wanted to ask. And I doubt Ganguro porn would be any good - I don't think they are as tanned under their clothes as they appear to be on the publicly exposed body parts...

I was there 2 years ago and half the girls walking around Shibuya at night have roast chicken coloured skin and massif shocks of grey hair.

And thigh high boots, but they all had those. Every single girl in Japan.

As for those harajuku girls, a friend of mine who was teaching there told me that he lost some respect for them when he realized the seemingly intricate outfits they're wearing are often purchased, fully assembled, at stores in the area.

I guess they still get points for wearing them, and dancing in public in them, though.

Actually there's nothing in her original post that indicates she was referring to Harajuku as a style. It's entirely possible she meant it as "I like Harajuku (the area that has a lot of these styles on display)."

So either she's didn't mean it that way in which case it was actually a pretty adept backpeddle, or she did, in which case STFU
