Well for starters, they cater to about the same demographic. Same self-righteous 'I own the game' attitude (and somewhat rightfully so.. highschool girls buy their CDs in record numbers).

Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, they both make unnecessary hip hop remixes of really good songs by other artists. (not trashing the hip hop remix, but for fucks sake, it spawns a whole new breed of musical ignorance)

Girl #1: This new Kanye is awesome, Kanye is SUCH a good producer.
Billy: You know, Kanye didn't actually write this beat, the original is by Daft Punk.
Girl #1: Yeah right, who's "Daft Punk"?

Girl #2: Some old white guy ripped off Puff Daddy's "Missing You"

... Of course this compare and contrast is more valid when considering Puffy in his "prime" years.

Don't get me wrong, you gotta respect these guys for their marketing, which is pretty much what they boil down to. They have an amazing knack for tuning into the psyche of the average adolescent white suburbanite and feeding their cravings to live vicariously through bullshit lyrics.

One last thing that they have in common.. in 20 years, nobody will give a shit or remember either of their names, unless they happen to be the punch-line of some joke.

^ meh.. unless kanye finds himself another biggy smalls to record a few legendary records and then get shot to death; I can't see his career becoming anywhere near as succesful as sean combs empire.

like wood said. kanye is going for scandal, but the kind of scandal he's chasing is so tame that it's almost satirical.

Last week he robbed a library to make headlines, but nobody cared.

now i may be proven completely wrong on this, but hey i'm predicting the future.

i really doubt that kanye will continue to use crazy antics to sell records. hence the title of his latest album, "graduation", kanye will now "graduate" and mature into the artist that he should have been from the start.

i challenge anyone to prove that kanye's music is "fluff", "typical", or "crap".... because it's not. sure you personally might not like his music for anyone one reason, but aside from personal preference, there's no real "lacking" quality in his music.

i cant imagine that i'm the only one who's seen him grow from the immature, spolied "drop out" that he once was...

back on point though, kanye has already planted the seeds to ensure that his "legacy" remains for years to come. aside from his own music, GOOD music will continue to release hot albums, and his clothing line will also take it to another level.

having common, consequence, john legend, and fonzworth bentley among others on your label says a lot. i really doubt that such "down to earth" artists would associate themselves with someone like kanye if he truely was as everyone here imagines him as.

^that's the thing man. I don't buy the image that he is selling on tv/radio as a very true representation of who Kanye West may really be, and you'd never know anyways because being real doesnt sell records to 14 year old girls.

what attracts me to hiphop in the first place is that its all about "keepin it real". The kanye west cartoon character that is sold on much music just doesnt really feel like true-blue hiphop to me.

It doesn't feel like he's sharing a piece of his soul, so much as it feels he is selling what he and his team thinks is marketable hiphop music.

I want to hear some heart, blood, sweat and tears in the music I listen to.
Buddy yappin about dropping out of college courses his parents paid for doesn't appeal to me.

I prefer musicians who have come from dirt. Not only because I can relate with them, but because they always have a better story to share than spoiled little bitches like Kanye.

So far the only thing you've been able to compare the two to is something that just about all pop producers seem to run into within the realm of hip-hop.... F'rinstance....

How many kids do you think hear Under Pressure and think that they stole it from Vanilla Ice? Same thing for those that hear Superfreak and assume it's MC Hammer? Or people that hear Opus III and say "Oh wow! It's that ATB song!".

Welcome to sample culture, where songs become bastard versions of songs, over and over and over again.

^ no kidding. You'd have to be completely basic to ignore the positive roll that sampling has played in the production/evolution of hiphop.

it's only sampling until someone does to an artist that you've actually heard of before. Then it's stealing right?

I mean, how dare Kanye West sample such gods like Daft Punk.

Cause you know, Daft Punk writes all their tunes from scratch right?

right?

Funny thing is Harder Better Faster Stronger doesn't deviate too much from Coca Bottle Baby as it sits. Only thing they really did differently was the mad vocoder action. Though they almost singlehandedly justifies the vocoder's existence in that one track alone.

I'm not here to debate the merit of sampling, as that's not what I was getting at. Of course sampling is a pillar of hip hop/electronica and even pop these days (some, if not most of my favourite house and hip hop tracks are full of samples), but what I said remains true... If you're going to take classic songs like Pressure or Superfreak and get famous off of them (because to be honest, you could be shit and get famous off that music), you're going to end up being a joke when looked back on 20 years from now... I mean hammer pants are fly and all, but do you think anyone's going to give a shit about what MC Hammer "contributed" musically 20 years from now? (or now for that matter)

Anyway, like I said, I was just backing up my comparison between the two artists

^no they won't remember him for what he did musically, but a lot of people will remember him.

mc hammer is now a leading investor in the "best" asian american movie production team. he's solely responsible for "better luck tomorrow" getting finished, and has had a key role in making "finishing the game" a possibility.

he wouldn't have been able to do any of that without his music "career" though.

ha ha, except the difference between Puff Daddy and Kanye West is that when diddy wanted to sample Led Zeppelin, he actually sampled the zep - and not a glorified zeppelin impersonator. *cough* Jamie Foxx *cough*

but that's enough Kanye bashing for me. I'm sure he's a cool guy when he's not competing with John Mayer and Britney Spears for business.

That's exactly my point. (Mind you, I didn't know that Hammer was doing anything aside from performing celebrity weddings for b-list actors like Cory Feldman)
