you didnt care about yourself when you were a teeny baby, but your parents loved you and cared for you untill you were able to care for yourself. and alot of old people dont/cant care for themselves. when you get really really down and you just dont care, it helps when your friends still care about you enough to drag you out of your self pity COMPASSION!! PEOPLE!!!!! ps: hahaha i love how its pretty much males vs females on this subject. |

he often goes of his meds, as many schizophrenics do because they think think they are cured(just another part of the disease), and he ends up in less than favorable conditions. he is fortunate and has a family that cares for him but many of the schizophrenics in this city dont. many of the homeless in vancouver suffer from mental disease. their homes like woodlands and riverview have been closed due to budget cutbacks. as a result, they end up on the street and turn to drugs. please enlighten me how this is their fault and how they arent victims of circumstance. |

i agree! i dont understand how people can judge other people they dont even know YOU ARE NOT THEM! you dont know the circumstances and background they come from. not everyone's minds work the same way as yours or mine. not everyone has the capabilities to work the same, nor do WE have the capabilitie to work the way they do. why cant we accept the fact that everyone is not capable of the same things and work with them, rather than against them? RAWR. /end rant. :P |

People make you make me so angry! are you aware that the gap between the rich and the poor is greater in the us than it is in certain 3rd world countries? Do you think african americans in the south are afforded the same opportunities as white americans in the north? I DON'T THINK SO! |

You're right about the gap between the rich and the poor, but this isn't about race. Sure racism still exists, some believe will always exist (like in the south), but there is just about enough reverse racism the playing feild is levelled off in many ways. But this is about the homeless, from the swaggering beggars, to the curled up drug addicts... for short, bums. Still people, yes, that may need support... but the world works in a way where you need to do it on your own feet, or face the consequences. Some people just don't mind sleeping on the side of an alleyway. There are others that seek help and get to outreach programs that fund alot of their recovery efforts (sometimes all), it works when they meet these non profit groups halfway. Can you think of any other way it could work without this self-commited attitude? Anything less just discourages progress, from the society, down to the individual. This sort of progress seems heartless, and it is in many ways, the odd thing is, it won't change until people progress to a more compassionate system. I have given away change to homeless before, now I only stick to the buskers, and the good ones only at that. I remember an article maybe half a year ago about a homeless man who was featured on the front page of the newspaper...they did a follow up story on him a few months later. Turned out this guy was a heroin addict who had a family and rather recently ended up on the street sleeping on a bench at victory square. The man saw the newspaper, it haunted him and made him face his demons. The follow up article was a success story, it was really touching to read that he straightened out his habit and got back in touch to be a good dad with his family, which was a huge thing for him and everyone that helped him on his way that got him a suit and a job were all rooting for him, it happened because he wanted it enough. Maybe this guy isn't even blazing up his dog...who knows...personally I think that's retarded unless the dog eagerly inhales the second hand smoke already....which some dogs do. In the end, Im not against the homeless having dogs...I think they end up bonding with them by having similar b.o. and both eating out of the garbage can. |

unless you're a sociopath its pretty hard to feel like everyhting is terrific when there's people who live like that. |

actually its not, as a general rule the poorer a country is the more extremethe income inequality is, because there simply is no middle class.
